Florida Southern Men Win SSC Title, Set Sights On Nationals

The Florida Southern Men’s Cross Country team recently won a record 16th Sunshine State Conference title. The Moccasins scored 34 points by placing five runners in the top 14, with their top three finishers placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The Moccasins are currently ranked 1st in the South region of Division 2 and they know that there is a huge target on their back. They do not have time to celebrate. There are other goals to be met. The top three teams from each region make it to the National Championship meet to be held on November 23rd in Spokane, Washington.

The Moc’s finished a disappointing 6th at last years region meet and they would like to make a return trip to the big dance. “This entire season has been about redemption” said senior Chris Trebilcock. “Whether it’s the disappointment of last years season, the feeling of being overlooked as a program, or other personal reasons, I think you have a group of guys that have a chip on their shoulder and want to prove that we are an elite program.” The Moc’s are running well but it hasn’t come easy. They lost 2 meets early in the season to Embry Riddle on tiebreakers and had a close battle with St. Leo University at their Conference meet. The Lions of St. Leo University finished 2nd by placing three runners in the Top 9, including the overall winner of the meet. It will be a very tight race for the 3 qualifying spots to Nationals. Florida Southern, Alabama-Huntsville, St. Leo, and West Florida all have been very close to each other this entire season. The jump to the 10k racing distance adds another interesting dynamic. You can check out the NCAA Division II South Regional Championships in Dover, FL on Saturday, November 9th.
