In His Own Words: Amir Rasul - Dedicated to Rudy Cambridge, Jr., Columbus C/O 1983

For the past two months my family had been praying for my uncle, Rudy Cambridge, Jr., to recover from a severe stroke. However, on March 28, my uncle passed away. His passing really affected me because we spent a lot of time together when he visited Miami. I chose to attend Columbus because he had always told me about the great times he and my uncle Alonzo Highsmith had while they were there. He wore number 34 and was the starting fullback for the Explorers. In fact, my Uncle Rudy was on Columbus’ 1983 State Runner-up football team. I wear number 34 as a varsity player in honor of him.

The day of my uncle’s homegoing services was the same day as the World Youth Olympic Trials. For days, my mom and I contemplated withdrawing my name from the competition. Instead of withdrawing, we made a decision for me to run and I dedicated both the 100 and 200 to him. I know my uncle would have wanted me to run that day. I ran a wind-legal 10.47 100m. That’s a PR for me!

Districts is next week everyone. I am as anxious to run as everyone else. I pray that all competitors are healthy and ready to take the South Florida talent to Jacksonville. God bless each of you.
