Raiders Get Richer: 400m Stud Jamal Walton Planning To Attend STA

4A state champions St. Thomas Aquinas could add another standout sprinter to their powerhouse program. Miami Gardens XPress coach Darius Lawshea has informed flrunners.com that class of 2017's Jamal Walton is in the process of joining the Raiders for the 2014-2015 school year. Lawshea says Walton attended Hallandale Adult as a freshman to better himself and pull up his grades to a higher standard, but now it is time to move on.

"It was between St. Thomas Aquinas and American Heritage. I really like both schools. Jamal fastest FAT is 47.28. With his talent and if he can remain healthy he will go 45-46. He has had a ankle problem for about three months so we have been dealing with that.  He runs 47 low to easy so the sky is the limit for him."

Walton admits his first love is football so Lawshea believes his future will also depend on how happy he is doing both sports. The sophomore to be plans to go 45 seconds next year and his club coach thinks he has the talent to do so.

Recently, Walton was second in the prelims at the Golden South Classic, but did not compete in the finals. According to our recent Tack & Field Powerhouse Program Rankings, St. Thomas has one of the deepest 400 meter lineups in the country with senior to be Rasheed Tatham, the 4A state champion who has run 46.79. Add Walton into the mix, and rich could be even richer!

* Note:  If Walton is accepted into STA, he will be surrounded with familiar faces in former Miami Gardens XPress teammates Justin Brown (50.27 - 400m) as a freshman,  800m runner Yohance Haynes (1:54 - placed 4th Golden South), and Jermaine Byrd (middle school state champion 100H, runner up 200H).
