Girls Highlights

The girls Class A team title was never in doubt. The Holy Trinity girls were heavy favorites coming in and their studs delivered. National long jump leader Daryth Gayles braved the rainy runway Friday, winning the girls long jump at 19-2.5. It was off her earth-shattering 20-0 from regionals but she was happy with the result.
"I was hoping for a PR but considering everything I'm pretty happy," Gayles said. "I was a little off, having water on the board makes it less springy and I didn't want to tire myself out."
Gayles followed it up by taking second in the 100m (12.16), just behind a blazing fast Teahna Daniels of First Academy. Both Gayles sisters helped the 4x100m relay to a state title in 49.04.
Gabrielle Gayles then took her turn. Gaby won the 400m in 54.60, smashing her regional time of 55.97. Then she took second in the 200m in 24.50 behind Daniels of First Academy. Daniels won both sprint events for the Royals.
Evangelical Christian girls came in second, helped by Sarah Candiano winning the 1600m in 5:04.79 and taking third in the 3200m. Teammate and sixth-grader Sierra Oliveira second place in the girls 800m in 1A in 2:19.44. Oliveira also ran a leg on the runner-up 4x400m relay. Evangelical Christian's Drew McMichael out-jumped all other boys in the Class 1A pole vault. McMichael was off even his regional mark but he was able to clear 14-6 in the soaked conditions.
The Oak Hall girls came in third with 42. The Eagle girls led by senior Brittney Olinger clipped top-seeded Holy Trinity and shattered their regional time of 9:50.87 by going 9:35.22 in the 4x800m. Olinger grabbed sixth in the girls 3200m in 11:23.91.
"We knew what we were capable of, we had a workout Friday that gave us confidence for this race," Olinger said.
Individually there were some fantastic accomplishments. Shorecrest Prep freshman Katie Barnett claimed fourth with a jump of 18-2.25. Second-seeded Admiral Farragut's Brittany McGee settled for third in the long jump at 18-3.25 after only logging two jumps. McGee took it out on the hurdles winning the 100m hurdles in 14.83 and the 300m hurdles in 46.44 even after twisting her ankle in the starting blocks.
In the girls pole vault, Indian Rocks Christian's Bobbi LaBrant cleared 10-0 to claim the 1A state title. Top-seeded Karin Sastre, who cleared 10-6 at regionals, failed to clear any height on the soaked runway.
Boys Highlights

Westminster Academy edged First Academy 96.5 to 90 to take the team title.
"We knew it would come down to these points (in the 4x400m) with triple jump still going, we knew we had to have that score," Lions coach Doria Yeaman-Rickel said.
Yeaman-Rickel commended junior Andrew Carrie's lead leg, running what she called his best split of the season. Teammate Andrew James was second in the open 400m, third in the 200m, and anchored the relay. Terrel Phillips won the boys high jump for the Lions at 6-2 and Chris Miller topped his regional mark by more than two feet winning the boys shot at 53-9.5. Westminster's Mitchell Etienne finished second behind him with 50-8 and Luke Miseyko was third for the Lions.
As it was, First Academy finished in front of the Lions in 3:19.69 in the event but Westminster had the points. Michael Taylor won the 110m hurdles for First Academy in 14.67 and the 330m hurdles in 39.74. Armand Woodley cleared 14 feet in the pole vault to take second. Teammate Michael Timpson Jr. won the 100m in 11.01 and teammate Jahquez Durham was second. The First Academy boys also won the 4x100m. Timpson Jr. was also second in the 200m to Christian Philpott of North Florida Christian. Philpott also won the 400m in 48.17.
Windemere Prep's Franco Martins was dominant in the distance events, winning both, the 1600m in 4:22.33 and the 3200m in 9:26.01, setting down his regional marks in both events.
In boys discus, Alan McFarland of Father Lopez braved a throwing ring that was actually a puddle to win the event with a throw of 167-9.
"I've been throwing on a wet surface all season," McFarland said. "I switched to a different pair of shoes with more grip."
Maclay School clipped top-seed Holy Trinity in the boys 4x800m winning in 8:09.03.
Heights were hard to clear in the high jump. In 1A on the boys side, Terrel Phillips won it at just 6-2, after having cleared 6-4 at regionals.
