Salute To Seniors: Avriel McCutcheon - Lyman High School

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race would probably be districts my junior year. I got a stomach virus the night before but I knew my team was ranked fourth. I really wanted us to make it to regions so I ran and we ended up making it.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition has always been myself. I have teammates that have pushed me and helped me and been competition, but mainly I focus on personal goals and how those will help the overall team goals.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Getting under 20 minutes in the 5k was a goal I had for a while so when I finally did that I was really happy.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in highschool?

There's honestly not much I would or could change. I've always given it my best and worked hard, it hasn't always turned out exactly how I wanted it but I don't have any regrets. I've had a great four years and made memories I will never forget.

What were the most difficult problems you had to overcome?

Personal issues unrelated to running had a big impact on my running my junior year. I wanted to quit my junior track season, but I'm so glad I didn't. Once I was able to get past those I was ready for senior year and more motivated than ever.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my  teammates! Both boys and girls. I have gotten so close to them and they feel like family. I'm going to miss camp, Clermont runs, team sleepovers, tye dye, pumpkin carving, morning runs, my teammate Norma serenading us with Ave Maria in the showers, and just seeing their beautiful faces everyday. I LOVE YOU ALL.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

I would tell them to have fun, train smart, and trust yourself. If you work hard it will pay off, not always right away but it will.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Finke and Coach Rivera have been the best coaches I could ask for. They've taught me how to be a leader and that not every race is going to be your best race but you should always give it your best. Those are things that I will carry on in life.

What are your college plans?

I will be running for the University of West Florida this fall. I'm so happy to be able to continue competing in college and excited to be a part of the team.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I'd like to thank my family and my parents for being a great support system and my coaches for always being there and believing in me and my teammates for being awesome and always putting a smile on my face.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Good luck to everyone in cross country next fall!
