Salute To Seniors: Jasmine Burkett - Bolles School

Jasmine Burkett receives the A.C. Skinner Award which is the highest athletic award given at the Bolles School.

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race was my Freshman year at the State 2A meet and my 4x800 team came into the race ranked 15  and we ended up winning the race which was also the first race
of the day to the number one seated team American Heritage.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I would consider myself as my biggest competition over my four year because each year I set a new stander for myself that I have to be better and unique from the last year. I feel that this challenge that I give myself drives me to do great things making me my biggest competitor.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment is leaving my high school track career on a high note with a State Championship.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn't change anything about my running career in high school, I feel that every meet and day was a great day because I was able to reflect, learn and grow from each experience or competition that I was in.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

I was blessed not to have to many injuries that prevented me from running but an obstacle which was difficult to overcome was finding more time in my day to not only study for school and train for track but also find time to play basketball which is also a sport I'm good at and enjoy doing.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss the many coaches and friends that I meet throughout my years running track. I will also miss my teammates especially the ones apart of our first State Championship team this year, and also I will miss our huge following of parents and friends that would come to every meet to support the team.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

My advise to younger athletes is to keep working and pushing hard even when nobody looking, and remember that eventually your time will come to shine and that it is important to be ready for the opportunity. I would also say to keep God first and nothing is impossible and lastly to have fun and enjoy the moment.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coaches have played a huge part in making me the athlete I am today. They constantly push me and encourage me to new limits throughout my high school years running track. Being around my coaches and listening to their knowledge has inspire me and built me to do even more great things in the future in track and in life.

What are your college plans?

I plan to continue running track in college and major in Pre Medicine.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank God for allowing me to participate in a sport that I love at a high level and keeping me safe from major injuries. I also want to thank my parents for being there at just about all my track meets and practices and for the funding and support that they give. I would like to thank my brother for his tough criticism and the many family and friends that prayed for me throughout my career.  Lastly I want to thank my coaches for the many hours and days they invested in helping me to become a better athlete on the track and a better person, and I would also like to thank the administration and teachers at Bolles High school for all their support in preparing me to be able to achieve my goals in the future.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."  - 2 Timothy 4:7
