In His Own Words: Amir Rasul - From The Gridiron To The Track

As a two-sport student-athlete, I never really have an “off-season". Some of my comrades in the sports world understand this quite well. However, I have grown to understand my body and how to calm it by not thinking so much about my next competition. I can usually accomplish this by sketching or researching some issue on the Internet. Occasionally, I'll pop open one of my historical literature or facts books and read a few chapters. I relish vacations and use long weekends to relax and regroup. This is very important as I transition into my junior track season.

I must begin this track season with thanks to God for a successful football season this past Fall. I remained injury-free while rushing and receiving for a total of 956 yards. I scored 15 touchdowns and received Second Team All-Dade Honors. Blessings galore! In addition, I currently have several scholarship offers from some of the nation's greatest universities. Speaking with college coaches and receiving scholarship offers are humbling experiences. These experiences have given me added encouragement to excel in the classroom as well as on the field.

My goal this track season is to maintain my current weight of 204lbs while dropping my 100m and 200m times. This will take serious effort! My normal sprinting weight hovers around 192lbs. I have challenged myself to use my weight for more strength and power on the track. My coaches are teaching me how to use my size to push out of the blocks and enter into a quick and effective drive phase. During practice, I've had to adjust certain techniques of my race such as block positioning. Practice. Practice. Practice.

My diet adjusted this year also. During the winter break, my mom convinced me to try a kale smoothie. The green liquid alone made me turn my head. However, I decided to give it a try. I was not immediately impressed by its flavor, but it wasn't so bad. The bitterness was masked by the blend of apples and pineapple chunks. This natural smoothie was a great addition to my diet because it makes me feel lighter and gives me a boost of energy. However, I wouldn't recommend it directly before a meet!!

Let's get this track season started! May each of your reach your personal goals this year.
