The New Balance Indoor Grand Pix in Boston served as a race track for America's best distance runners on Saturday. Two Florida natives Jenny Simpson (Barringer) and Nicole Tully (Schappert) added to their impressive pro careers with an American Record and a near miss by Tully's DMR squad.
Simpson, who graduated from Oviedo High School in 2005, broke a thirteen year old American record in the two-mile. After miss counting laps in last year's NB Indoor Grand Prix, she came back to win the event this year in 9:18.3 surpassing Regina Jacobs time of 9:23.38 from 2002. Tully (Schappert), like Simpson graduated in 2005. The former Pope John Paul II and Villanova standout is currently running for Hoka One One and competed for the NY All-Stars this weekend. Running the anchor leg in the DMR, Tully and Brenda Martinez went head to head down the straightaway for the final 100 meters of the race.
Martinez edged out Tully to give team New Balance the win in a new American and world record time of 10:42.57. Tully's quartet was just behind in 10:42.79. See what she had to say after the race on Twitter.
