Salute To Seniors: Jonathan Werble - Cypress Bay High School

The 2014-2015 school year has provided some great highlights in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. In the coming weeks many of our seniors will head out to start their college careers both athletically and academically. We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.

What was your most memorable race/moment?

Winning my cross country district race in 2014. I ran the best race of my life that day and beat runners whom I haven't beaten in the past! That was just the flame ignition to wanting to win every race that I competed in after that, which I feel had a big impact on me for my track season, giving me confidence in winning races.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I'd like to say my biggest competition over my four years would have to be my teammates Cullen Harper and Thomas Morin, two very strong runners.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment would definitely be qualifying for states for the first time in cross country and it happened to be my senior year!

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would have started cross country as a freshman. I didn't find my interest in the sport until my junior year since I was overwhelmed with ice hockey and school every day freshman and sophomore year. I gave that up when I realized I had more potential in running and it required more time and physical rest. I ran track all four years, but cross country just my junior and senior year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My most difficult obstacle that I had to overcome would be during my 11th grade track season, I had a COLLAPSED LUNG one day before practice and was rushed to the ER. I felt like I was going to die that day. I almost needed surgery, but after the x-ray, I was told that I was lucky and did not need it. I then recovered a few weeks later, trained hard and went sub 5 for the 1600!

What will you miss the most?

I will miss the team camaraderie that I have developed over the past four years. I have made some good friends/bonds.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

I would tell younger athletes that hard work pays off and to set short/long term goals. Also, to follow the coaches plan because they know what they are doing.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach has influenced me to work hard in life/school/work and to try and stay off technology and enjoy life.

What are your college plans?

I'm currently trying to get into FAU for the fall semester. My plan is to run for their cross country team.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to give a huge thanks to my parents for always being there, supporting and motivating me to success, and a big thanks to my coach and teammates who were there to push me into improving as a runner and as a person.
