So Long Senior Year: Ashley Miller Headed To University of Texas

East Ridge junior Ashley Miller has decided to skip her senior season, graduate early and enroll at the University of Texas. Miller, who transferred to Florida from Colorado this year and recently won the 4A state championship in both the 100 and 300m hurdles will join fellow Floridian Teahna Daniels, one of the top sprinters in the country, as members of the Longhorn's highly regarded recruiting class of 2015 athletes.

The move comes just a few months after fellow East Ridge junior Kaylin Whitney signed a professional track and field contract with Nike and forfeited her high school eligibility.

Miller says it was the best decision for her to graduate early.

"After my transfer from Colorado, I had only needed one more credit to graduate, so I added an extra class. It didn't make sense to go to high school for another year when I only needed one credit."

She shared the news on social network saying, "God has blessed me with so many amazing opportunities. I've very Happy to announce I've committed to run track at The University of Texas! Super excited to become a longhorn in the fall." #hookemhorns

Miller, one of the top hurdlers in the nation, recently won the Golden South Classic and owns personal bests of 13.48 (US#5) in the 100m hurdles and 41.56 in the 300m hurdles (US#5). Since coming down to Florida, she has trained with Whitney's Star Athletics group, coached by former Olympians Dennis and Damu Mitchell.

Damu Mitchell said the Longhorns were getting a "hard worker and someone who is determined."

She picked the Longhorns over offers from the University of Florida and Washington State, two schools who knew she was graduating early and that both showed interest. Miller says she is looking forward to what she can do at UT.

"UT has everything I need to continue to be successful in the sport and to continue to become a better hurdler, and student. The recruiting of UT this year was very successful so I'm excited to train with amazing athletes that have a love for the sport like it do. I'm also looking forward to the amazing coaching staff. They are great people."
