Merritt Island Hurdler, Harvard Signee Jimmy Batch Balances Two Sports Plus Academics

Jimmy Batch excels at everything he does whether its as the quarterback of the Merritt Island football team, on the track as a state finalist in the hurdlers or in the classroom as a Harvard University signee. We caught up with Batch to talk about sports, school, life, and much more.

How did you get started in track and field?

I grew up playing a bunch of sports. There was an annual community track meet for elementary schools which I did and enjoyed. I watched both my brothers run track which gave me incentive to do it also.

You've competed in the 100, 200, 110mH, 300mH, relays, and the long jump during your time in high school. Which events are your favorite?

My favorite events is the 110 hurdles and 4 x 100.

In addition to track and field you are the signal caller for the Mustang's football team. How has track helped you with football and vice versa?

Football and track both compliment each other. Personally, track definitely helped me for football. Speed kills. Track got me faster which translated to the football field.

The combination of athletic ability and academics has you headed to Harvard University where you will play football for the Crimson. What sold you on the Crimson?

Harvard is my dream school and I'm really thankful and excited to be going there. I will be playing football there but track is always an option. My desire to receive a very impactful degree equaled my desire to play football at the next level and Harvard is the perfect place to fulfill that. I plan on studying economics.

Now that your college decision is behind you and the football season is over. You are ranked in the top ten in both the 110m and 300m hurdles. What are your goals for the 2017 track season?

My goal is to qualify and compete in the state championship in the 110 hurdles.

Who do you attribute your success too?

I attribute my success to my very supportive family, teammates and coaches. I try to soak in as much information and critique as I can. I strive to learn as much as possible from others.
