Clement Settles for Bronze, Two Gators Advance at World Championships

Kerron Clement's mistake at the final hurdle cost him gold, but incoming freshman Hakim Sani Brown supplanted Usain Bolt in the IAAF World Championships record book.
LONDON – Kerron Clement (2004-05) did not collect the historic third IAAF World Championships 400-meter hurdles gold medal he sought, but the reigning Olympic gold medalist nabbed bronze, the Gators' second of the week.

Paired with his 2007 and 2009 world titles, Clement, who turns 32 years old in October, is just the fourth three-time 400 hurdles medalist in World Championships history. He joins the likes of Samuel Matete, Stephane Diagana, and Felix Sanchez. Of the four, Clement and Sanchez are the only two with a pair of world titles and an Olympic gold.

TJ Holmes (2015-17), the USATF Outdoor Championships bronze medalist, capped a season of tremendous improvement with a fifth-place finish in the same final, missing fourth by 0.01 seconds.

In the Gators' other final Wednesday (Aug. 9) night, Novlene Williams-Mills, the oldest female 400 meters finalist in World Championships history, crossed eighth. The Jamaican team captain and six-time World Championships medalist will be back this weekend as a member of her country's 4x400 relay.

Incoming freshman Hakim Sani Brown supplanted Usain Bolt as the youngest World Championships 200 meters finalist in history. Bolt made the 2005 final the day before he turned 19 years old, while Sani Brown, also a 100 meters semifinalist, turned 18 in March. Sani Brown earned an automatic berth with a runner-up finish in his semifinal heat.

Two-time Olympian Genevieve LaCaze (2009-12) became the first Australian and Gator in history to qualify for the World Championships 3,000-meter steeplechase final, doing so automatically with a third-place finish in her heat. LaCaze, the Australian record holder and still Florida's school record holder, posted a season-best time of 9:27.53. She runs the final Friday (Aug. 11) at 4:25 p.m. ET.

Appearing in her sixth World Championships, the second-most by a female Gator, Great Britain's Shara Proctor  (2007-10) finished 13th in long jump qualifying. Proctor missed the last qualification spot by one centimeter.
