Spotlight Athlete: Clay Milford - Chiles High School

Clay Milford one of 1A's best runners has transferred to 3A power Chiles for his junior season. We caught up with Milford about his decision and his quest to win a state title with his new team in this Spotlight Athlete feature.

How long have you been running and how did you get started?

Running started six years ago for me, when I decided I wanted to be in the military. To get into shape I raced a 1 ½ mile loop every night trying to break thirteen minutes and accidentally fell in love.

Do you remember your first real race?

My first race was in 6th grade where I ran a 22:12 in a local 5k.

How is your summer training going?

This summer I feel more fit than ever training with my new team, Chiles High School. The switch has been a long time in the making and I'm very fortunate that my new school happens to have such a great running program. The transition has no question rustled some feathers and if anyone has a problem he or she can race me anytime.

What was your 2016 XC season like?

My 2016 cross country season was filled with months of hard work and occasional triumphs such as winning the regional championship however I still came up short in the grand scheme of things. After adjusting I am now in a position to do big things this season.

How are workouts going? Do you have a favorite?

At this point in the season my week looks like easy mileage on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, light stimulus workouts on Tuesday and Thursday, and a long run on Saturday. Mile repeats are my favorite.

Which meets will you be running in this year?

A few big races we're hitting this season include Florida Horse Park, Alligator Lake, and Great American in North Carolina.

Do you have a favorite course? What do you think is the toughest course in the state?

The Sunny Hills course in Tallahassee is probably my favorite course and in my opinion, Cougar Challenge is the hardest course in the state.

Out of all your running accomplishments so far, which stands out the most?

I would say that getting 3rd in the 3200m at state last year was an accomplishment that stands out most in my mind.

What are your goals for the upcoming cross country season?

This season my goals include doing my part in bringing home a State Championship for Chiles XC and for myself, low 15:50's.

What do you love most about running?

I love how running is a pure reflection of your drive, perseverance, and everything you are on display. There is no relying on other teammates, no excuses, and no halftimes or water breaks.
