Did anyone say DUVAL? Cause the distance boys from DUVAL put on a show! Districts are underway in Florida and so far a lot of big names are doing what they have to do to qualify to the next rounds. With the state series beginning, athletes who have been injured are back and records are continuing to fall. Make sure to vote for your favorite athlete and then check who won.
Thomas Burns- The senior from Miami Northwestern HS has continued to build his legacy as he won the 110 hurdles and the 400 meter dash at the 3A District 16 meet, and did this by running the fastest times in Florida for the week. The national holder in the 300 meter hurdles did not compete in the event at the district meet, yet Burns is showing his wide range of skills this postseason.
Damarius Good- A new name to grace this list came out of the district held out at Clermont. The junior from Lake Brantley HS swept the sprinting events at the 4A District 2 as he won the 100m in a time of 10.63 and the 200m in a time of 21.88. Good's 10.63 was the fastest 100 time of the week in Florida.
Charles Hicks- There was no rust on the legs of Hicks after being at Arcadia a week ago, as he won the 3200 meter at the 2A District 4 meet. The junior from Bolles HS had the week's fastest 3200 with a time of 9:22.35 as he also finished 2nd in the 1600 behind Jubran with a time of 4:23.56.
Amari Johnson- The junior from Hallandale HS won the 300 hurdles at the 2A District 15 meet in a time of 38.03 and also set the fastest time in the state with the win. Johnson is the top 2A 300 hurdler and 2nd in 2A in the 110 hurdles. Amari also won the 110 hurdles at the 2A District 15 meet with a 14.44.
Nathan Jubran- The UNF signee had quite a District meet as he won the 1600 and finished second in the 3200 at the 2A District 4 meet. The senior from Bishop Kenny (pictured on the cover at the FSU Relays) posted the fastest time of the week in the 1600 with a 4:18.69. Jubran finished 3rd at the 2017 2A FHSAA Cross Country Finals, and is no stranger to the limelight.
Cameron Leiba- The junior from Dillard HS makes a return to this list as he put up the fastest 200 meter dash time of the week in Florida with a 21.02. Leiba won all three sprinting events at the 3A District 15 meet, where he respectively also ran 48.41 in the 400 and 10.81 in the 100.
Jacob Lemmon- To the surprise of not many, Lemmon set the best mark in the discus for the week as he won the 3A District 11 meet with a throw of 189-7. The junior from Fort Myers HS leads the state in the discus and is #6 in the country in the discus. Lemmon finished 12th at the State Championship last year and will be looking for some redemption at UNF in a couple weeks.
Noah Mumme- The senior from Satellite HS set a new personal best in the pole vault as he vaulted 16-2.75 feet to easily win the 2A District 13 meet. Mumme, who has been one of the to pole vaulters in the state, nudged closer to the FL #1 mark of 16-4.75, held by Stone Baker. To set a new personal best at his district meet is a good sign, as Mumme is the favorite to win the 2A State Championship.
Chase Rivera- The junior from Bolles HS set the FL #4 800 time at the 2A District 4 meet, by winning in a time of 1:52.78. Rivera joins a crowded list of the top 800 meter runners in the state as he set the fastest time of the week in the Sunshine State. Rivera also qualified in the 1600 with a time of 4:23.88.
Arian Smith- The sophomore from Mulberry HS set a new FL #1 and US #1 in the long jump this week at the 2A District 9 meet with a giant leap of 25-3.25 feet. Not only did he dominate in the long jump, Arian also won the 100 and 200 in respectable times of 10.78 and 21.91. Smith is a dual sport athlete who is gaining the attention of many on the gridiron, but also is turning heads in the world of track and field.
