With eight seniors in the top 10 from the 2018 state meet -- four of them with the Bolles school -- gone and graduated, the door for the individual state title has flown right open for the 2A boys this season.
Bolles had a historic finish last year scoring 21 points as a team to win the state title tying the lowest scored points with Palmer Trinity from back in the 1980s.
Anderson Denton and Robert Pedroza are the lone returners from last year's top 10 class and Denton will move up to 3A this year.
Pedroza was inching towards his 15:53 PR on the ARP course last season, running a 16:02.03 to finish 10th at the state meet. The middle distance specialist finished second in the 1600m and 800m at the state meet running a new PR of 4:13.82 and 1:52.08. Interestingly enough, the south Florida native, also tried his hand at the 400m at the state meet -- placing 10th in a time of 49.62. One thing is for sure, you won't want Pedroza on your back heading into the final 400m of a 5k.
Don't count out Satellite duo, Gabe Montague and Justin Wilson, for the running for an individual state title. Montague had a very strong sophomore track season, clocking PR's of 4:23.73 in the 1600m and 9:23.03 in the 3200m. Wilson lead the Scorpions to a state runner-up finish last year and ended his track season a little early in March after two PRs in the 1600m and 3200m.
Satellite is the strong favorite to win the 2A team title in November. With five guys capable of going sub 17 consistently and two others in the low 17 range, Satellite's key will be to run as a pack, work off one another, and stay healthy to perform when it counts. With Josh Kraver transferring over to Satellite from Edgewood this season, the Scorpions will be a tough team to beat.
Gavin O'Brien will put some pressure on Satellite's top guys. Coming from the cape coast, O'Brien didn't have an ideal finish at last year's state finals, but he came back this track season to finish seventh in the 3200m at states in a new PR of 9:31.42.
Bishop Kenny, Astronaut, Berkeley, and Bolles will be teams to watch for this season in their pursuit for a podium finish.
