DOVER, Fla. - The University of South Florida cross country teams each finished second to open up their 2009 season at the University of Tampa Early Bird Classic Friday night after a nearly two-hour lightning delay prevented full results from being compiled.
The women ended the night with a total of 48 points to come in second behind the host Spartans, who took the invitational title with 35 points. Nine teams comprised the field at the 5K invite. Both the men and women ran the 5K.
The men, meanwhile, took second to Florida Southern. Point totals are currently unavailable for the men.
Sophomore Nicole Rozario grabbed the top spot among the Bulls and finished second overall with a time of 18:37.9. She was followed by fellow sophomore Allie Prendergast, who took fourth in 18:55.1.
Rounding out the top 5 for USF and finishing under 20 minutes were sophomores Jen Wynands (19:21.6, 11th place), Yasmin Smith (19:36.0, 14th) and Devin Spoerle (19:59.2, 17th).
Senior Ryan Courtoy and sophomore Phillip Wise were the top finishers for USF on the men's side, as Courtoy ran the race in 16:24 while Wise came in a close second in 16:26. Running in his first-ever collegiate race, freshman Felix Soto came in third among USF competitors with a time of 16:38. Junior Pedro Carela (16:44) and sophomore Lucas Simari (16:54) also posted top times for the Bulls.
Individual placements among the men have not yet been released. Times and placements for all USF athletes are below.
