Where Are They Now? Foot Locker Qualifiers, The Fluehr Twins

It was the headline for all of 2009 and 2010: The Fluehr Twins 1-2 Again.

At their final Foot Locker South Regional qualifier meet, the two Florida standouts continued their 1-2 streak, both capturing a spot in California for the national meet. Kathryn cruised to a 17:06 with Erika right behind in 17:10 on the McAlpine Course.

They came a long way from the 8th graders that showed up to their first cross country practice in basketball clothes. After years of hard work, they were multi-time state champions, state medalists, and national qualifiers all before graduating high school in 2011.

Aside from their record setting performances, the Fluehr twins had mental toughness that inspired those who watched from the spectator stands. In almost every race, the two would take the field out in a blistering pace, daring anyone and everyone to challenge them.

It's this mental toughness that led Kathryn and Erika beyond hard physical battles at Princeton and allowed them to move on to New Mexico and Michigan to finish out their collegiate careers and find a love for running that would last a lifetime.

They went on to graduate from their collegiate running career with graduate degrees in 2017, but their long time history with running wasn't over.

Now their running focus has shifted to the half and full marathon distances. In March of 2019, the two competed at the NYC half. In 2018 at the Indy Monumental Half, the duo ran outstanding PR's of 1:15:43 (Erika) and 1:14:00 (Kathryn) to earn their spots as two top amateur runners in the United States.

Earlier this month at the Indianapolis Marathon, Erika added Olympic Trials Marathon Qualifier to her resume, finishing seventh in a stacked field with a huge PR of 2:42:10.

"They have the confidence to compete with anyone on the line, yet they are humble enough to know that we have a lot more work ahead of us," Coach Cassie Barone of Community School of Naples told FLRunners in 2009.

From Foot Locker qualifiers to Olympic Trials qualifiers, the Fluehr twins continue to demonstrate their passion for the sport and for one another -- they can often still be seen lining up together in some races, just like they did 10 years ago.
