Fernandina Beach Runner Passes Away After Contracting Mono

Fernandina Beach cross country and track senior, Ariana Delfs, recently passed away from the Epstein-Barr virus, better known as mono.

According to WJXT news, Delfs started with cold and flu symptoms just three weeks prior. Her symptoms began to progress at a rapid rate leading to her contraction of mononucleosis -- something doctors had tested for but couldn't detect early on.

Just three months ago, Delfs was lining up on the cross country starting line at her district meet as Fernandina's beach pivotal second varsity runner.

As a gifted musician, artist, and athlete, Delfs' family has already begun to fight for their daughter's legacy and education on awareness of the symptoms that she faced.

The Delfs family plans to allocate funds raised to programs that their daughter would have wanted. Over the past few days, the fund has already raised over 14 thousand dollars in their daughter's honor.
