Sarah Trainor became the state record holder in the 2K steeplechase at the Race at the Oval Office meet early in May of 2019. She won the event with a personal best and the national high school record in this event with a time of 6:29.08.
But her season didn't end there. A month later, she stepped onto the track at the NYSPHSAA - NY State Championships in Middletown to compete for her first ever outdoor state title.
Trainor became the leader of the race as soon as the gun went off. As the laps continued to progress, the FDR High School athlete increased her lead. The last 800m of this race, she opened her stride and pumped her arms towards the finish. She crossed the finish line in 6:31.59, which broke the meet record held by Mary Kate Anselmini from 2011. Trainor finished this race ten seconds ahead of second place.
The 2019 2K steeplechase NY state champion will continue her athletic and academic career at University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
