Race By Race Preview: Guy Thomas Memorial Classic

Girls 4x800 Meter Relay

The girls 4x800 meter relay team will include three teams who have already broken 10 minutes this outdoor season including FL #4 ranked American Heritage at 9:38, FL #6 ranked Miami Northwestern at 9:44, and FL #11 ranked Naples at 9:53.

A couple of teams that have not loaded up their relay this spring who have potential to run well under 10 minutes include Academy of Holy Names with last year's 2A state 800 meter runner-up Elizabeth Williamson (2:14 PR) and IMG Academy with the likes of sub 2:10 half miler Layla Haynes and their freshmen star Huntley Buckingham.

Academy of Holy Names ran 9:29.57 last spring, while the IMG Academy girls actually ran 9:13.45 indoors two weeks ago in Boston at New Balance Nationals for seventh place in the championship race. The Northwestern girls are coming off a victory last week at the Bob Hayes Invitational.

Boys 4x800 Meter Relay

If they load up again, the Miami Northwestern boys could be runaway winners in the 4x800 meter relay as they are just one of four teams in the state this season to have broken 8 minutes in the event with their FL #3 season best of 7:56.52 from the Spartan Invitational. Northwestern boys were winners last weekend at the Bob Hayes Invitational as they nearly won all 3 relay races at the meet if not for last minute heroics from Flagler Palm Coast in the 4x400 meter relay.

A pack of Southwest Florida area schools will be chasing with Naples (8:18 season best), Cape Coral (8:20), Fort Myers (8:23), and the host school Dunbar (8:25) as most of said squads will be looking to push further in the 8:10's this weekend.
