An In-Depth Pepsi Florida Relays Sprints Preview

Girls 400m Dash

The last time that we saw Western freshman Skyler Franklin run 400 meters, she amazed us with a 53.37 season opener at the Louie Bing Invitational in early February.

That time still remains as the national lead.

What can she do for an encore at the Florida Relays? Maybe a meet record or a 52 second performance?

Franklin will have plenty of competition with her in the fast section of the event to keep her honest with a pack of girls capable of running 55 seconds or faster in the event in the top section and beyond. Four of the top seven ranked in Florida will be in the race, including Chaminade-Madonna sophomore Tyra Cox (54.71 PR) and Creekside junior Janay Moorer (54.72), who have both have broken 55 seconds this spring.

Bullis School, a national powerhouse program from Maryland, will have one of their top quarter milers entered in the race in sophomore Sydney Sutton with her 55.02 best as well as Sage Hinton.

Other out-of-state competitors to watch in the field include Jayla Johnson, a sophomore from Montford Academy in New York with a 55.30 personal best as well as another sophomore in Malia Campbell from Landmark Christian in Georgia with a 55.49 best.

Two athletes from Florida that might be ready for their first 54 second races include Montverde Academy junior Alivia Williams (55.02 PR) and Dr. Phillips freshman Nakira Hudson (55.27 PR).

Jaellen Burgess of Coral Reef appears to be trending in the right direction towards her PR of 54.29 from several years ago as a eighth grader with a season best time of 55.93 this spring as a high school senior.
