TAMPA
– The University of South Florida men's and women's track and field teams will make the trek up north to visit the Twin Cities as the Bulls get set to compete in the Minnesota Invitational Friday and Saturday. The women's pole vault and the heptathlon and pentathlon events will begin on Friday, while the rest of the meet will be held Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. EST at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

Check back at GoUSFBulls.com for the complete recap and meet results when they become available. As always, results will be posted first on the Media Center page located here, along with results from every meet throughout the year.

What a Debut
It didn't take long for several athletes to make a splash in the first meet of the season for the men, but probably none moreso than rookie sprinter Lindsey Lamar, who won the 60 meters at the Akron Quad last Friday by running a 6.77. His mark stands as the fastest time in the BIG EAST this season and ranks him in a tie for 15th in the nation heading into this weekend. Only one BIG EAST athlete last season, Syracuse's Michael LeBlanc, had a faster time during the 2008-09 indoor season than Lamar's 6.77.

Lamar earned BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors for his efforts. His time was just .06 seconds short of the NCAA Provisional qualifying time.

Lamar, a Tampa native who went to Hillsborough High School, even attracted the attention of some local media, as Fox 13 ran a story on its evening news Wednesday of how Lamar made a splash in both his collegiate debut on the football field for USF and in his collegiate debut on the track. Freshman Neamen Wise also made a solid debut, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships in the 60 hurdles and the long jump. Wise lept 23-4.5 as he took second in the long jump, while also running an 8.29 in the hurdles. Check below for the full recap of USF's BIG EAST qualifiers on the men's side.

On the women's side, rookie Monique Williams came out firing, as she qualified for the BIG EAST in the long and triple jumps while falling just short in the 60 meters. Her long jump distance of 18-5.75 immediately put her in fifth in the all-time record book, while her triple jump mark of 37-11.5 ranks her eighth. She was also only .04 seconds away from the BIG EAST qualifying mark in the 60 meters.

Speed in Full Force
If there was any doubt USF would have a wealth of talent in the sprints in 2010, those doubts were erased in that first meet at Akron. Along with Lamar's time, senior Greg Fontus currently owns the fastest BIG EAST time in the 200 meters as well with his time of 21.83. Fontus, along with senior Armante Marshall, also ran a sub-7.00 in the 60 meters along with Lamar, as they own three of the top eight times in the BIG EAST so far this season in the 60.

Lamar, Fontus and Marshall all qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 60 meters, while Fontus, sophomore Reshaw Exilien and senior Josh Wimbley did the same in the 200. Exilien and sophomore David Aristil also punched their ticket to the championships in the 400 meters, while senior Mikail Ebanks did so in the 500 meters.

More Speed On Its Way
USF will get even faster as the year wears on, as freshman Derrick Hopkins, who actually owns a faster personal best in the 100 meters than Lamar, has yet to make his debut as he continues to get healthy from a knee bruise suffered during football season.

As if that weren't enough, Hopkins and Lamar will be joined by fellow football teammates Sterling Griffin and Kayvon Webster for the outdoor season. Griffin, Webster and Hopkins were three of the four members of the Monsignor Pace High School 4x100 relay team that posted the fastest time in the nation last year in 40.54 seconds at the state meet, a time that even beat out the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship-winning relay team that won in 41.15 seconds. The trio led Monsignor Pace to three straight Florida state titles in the 4x100.

Last Time Out For the Bulls

The men posted 17 different BIG EAST qualifying marks in their first meet of the season at the Akron Quad Jan. 15. Nine of those marks alone came in the 60, 200, 400 and 500 meters, while all four pole vaulters surpassed the BIG EAST mark as well.

Check the table to the right to view all of USF's qualifying marks from the men's side achieved at Akron.

The women added four more BIG EAST marks along with the eight they accomplished at the Oiler Invite back in December. Williams added her two, while sophomores Shaniel Chambers and Allie Prendergast did so in the 500 and 3,000 meters, respectively. Prendergast posted a time of 9:57.87 in the 3,000, which surpassed her previous best - indoor or outdoor - by more than 15 seconds. Prendergast, Chambers and Lamar were the only three USF athletes to capture their event titles.

Junior MaShonda Rayner earned her way into the top 10 in the triple jump as well, while junior Stephanie Duffy equaled her career indoor best in the pole vault by clearing 12-7.5, a mark she hit last year as well. Duffy currently ranks second in the event all time behind former All-American Denise vonEynatten.
