MINNEAPOLIS - Freshman
Neamen Wise of the University of South Florida track and field team finished the first day of competition leading in the heptathlon after Friday's results in the Minnesota Invitational at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
Wise posted 3,007 points through the first four events of the heptathlon, ahead of North Dakota State's Weston Leutz, who had 2,935. Jack Szmanda of Minnesota stood third with 2,897.
Wise made an immediate impression when the heptathlon started off with the 60 meters. Wise outraced the rest of the field by posting a time of 6.86, surpassing the BIG EAST Championships qualifying time of 7.06. He then continued his great start by outleaping everyone in the long jump with a distance of 23-2.
Wise finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 36-9.5, then finished the day by coming in fourth in the high jump by jumping 6-1.5.
Wise and the rest of the heptathletes will finish competition Saturday with the 60 hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meters.
The women's pole vault was the only regular event held Friday, as junior
Stephanie Duffy finished third after coming up just short of her personal best by leaping 12-6.75. Junior
Dana Webb cleared 11-7 as she qualified for the BIG EAST Championships along with Duffy. Freshman
Nicole Smith went 10-7 at the meet as she finished short of the BIG EAST mark of 11-0.
Also Friday, the pentathlon was held at the Minnesota Fieldhouse, as junior
Rachel Etienne finished the meet in fourth with 3,128 points. North Dakota State's Whitney Carlson won the pentathlon title with 3,697.
Etienne took sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.65 seconds to begin the meet, then followed that up by taking third in the high jump by leaping 5-1.
After taking ninth in the shot put, Etienne bounced back to take third in the long jump, perhaps her strongest event, with a leap of 17-3.25. Etienne took fifth in the 800 meters in 2:35.98 to close out the pentathlon for her fourth-place overall finish.
The Bulls will be back at the track Saturday morning as the heptathlon and high jump get underway at 10 a.m. Central time.
