TAMPA - University of South Florida sophomore
Casey Wagner earned the third weekly award for the Bulls during the 2010 outdoor season when she was named the BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday by the conference office.
Wagner extended her own school record in the javelin to 155-7 at the Penn Relays last Thursday, placing fourth overall at one of the most premiere meets in the country. After originally setting the school record as a freshman, Wagner surpassed that in the first meet of the 2010 outdoor season when she threw 154-6.
Wagner's throw ranks her fourth in the BIG EAST this season and eighth in the NCAA East Region.
An All-BIG EAST performer last season when she took second at the BIG EAST Championships, Wagner joins two other sophomores in hurdler
David Aristil and discus thrower
Jared Thomas as weekly award winners during the outdoor campaign. Aristil was tabbed the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week on April 6, while Thomas won the Field Athlete of the Week award on March 30.
In addition, Wagner is the fourth winner overall for the 2009-10 season after freshman
Lindsey Lamar earned the Track Athlete of the Week honor during the indoor season on Jan. 19.
Wagner is the first female USF track and field athlete to win one of the two weekly awards in the two years the BIG EAST has handed them out.
Wagner will be back in action this weekend as one of several athletes on the men's and women's sides chasing a conference title at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships Friday through Sunday at Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium.
