Aristil Sets School Record on Way to 400 Hurdles Title

Men's Results | Women's Results | Saturday's Recap

CINCINNATI, Ohio
- Collapsing to his knees after crossing the finish line, sophomore David Aristil of the University of South Florida track and field team threw up his hands in celebration after capturing the BIG EAST title in the 400 hurdles Sunday in a steady rain at the BIG EAST Championships at Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium.

The win highlighted a day in which USF piled up five top-3 finishes on the day, including a second-place showing by senior Yvana Hepburn in the 100 hurdles and bronze medal honors by the men's 4x100 relay - which also set the school record in the process - senior Sean Young in the pole vault and junior MaShonda Rayner in the triple jump. They joined junior Dana Webb and freshman Monique Williams, who earned all-conference honors Friday in the pole vault and long jump, respectively.

Aristil, who came in seeded third at 51.31, ran the race of his life in 50.42 to set the new USF school record previously held by former Olympian Kemel Thompson, who had owned the top USF time since 1996 in 50.50. In a twist of irony, Aristil also broke Thompson's Gettler Stadium record of 50.83 set in 1996 as well. Georgetown's Toby Ulm finished second with a time of 50.69.

"I want to thank God for giving me the ability to get it done," said Aristil. "I ran my best at just the right time so far this season. It's an honor to break Kemel's record, especially because of his accomplishments here at USF in setting the bar so high for future hurdlers like me.

"This is definitely not the end for me. I'm looking forward to running faster down the road. With Him, all things are possible."

He became the third-straight 400 hurdles champion for the Bulls after Glenn Fowler won back-to-back BIG EAST titles in 2008 and '09 and the fourth overall along with Thompson's Conference USA title in 1996. Earlier in the day, Aristil took fourth in the 110 hurdles on the heels of a time of 14.20 in the final.Senior Yvana Hepburn With Her Second-Place Medal

In the final team standings, the women had their best team finish in five years in the BIG EAST when they came in seventh with 59 points. Their previous best had been 39.5 points in 2008 and a 10th-place showing last season. The men came in eighth with 47 points over the three days of competition.

Coming toward the end of her collegiate career, Hepburn ran 13.78 as she finished second in the 100 hurdles, a year after taking third at the 2009 BIG EAST Championships and a day after finishing fifth in the preliminaries. Shericka Ward of Villanova won the title Sunday after running 13.55.

The men's 4x100 relay ran better than any relay ever at USF after completing the lap around the track in 40.75, just eclipsing the previous best of 40.79 set at the Bulls Invitational March 19. Freshmen Lindsey Lamar, Kayvon Webster, Derrick Hopkins and senior Greg Fontus - in that order - finished third behind champion Syracuse which ran 40.63 and Georgetown which went 40.71.

The all-conference honor is the second in a row for the Bulls after placing second at the 2009 outdoor championships.

Hopkins later took fourth in the final of the 100 meters after posting a time of 10.79. Lamar pulled out of the final after getting slightly hurt in the 4x100.

A junior college walk-on this year, the rain didn't affect Rayner one bit as she easily posted a new personal best in the triple jump, earning the bronze medal Sunday after leaping 39-9.25 behind Seton Hall's Louise Faye and Syracuse's Ieva Staponkute. Rayner's previous best had stood at 38-1.5. Her All-BIG EAST mark moved her into sixth all-time at USF.

Senior Sean Young was USF's final all-conference honoree in the pole vault, as the 2008 BIG EAST champion came in third after clearing a height of 16-6.75. Young also earned all-conference honorees at the indoor meet where he placed second. Also scoring points for the Bulls in the pole vault was freshman Wyatt Metzger, who tied for sixth at a height of 15-9.

Senior Samantha Shade also made it to the final of the triple jump as she came in seventh overall with a leap of 39-0.5. A throw of 168-8 in the hammer gave sophomore Lauren Noe a seventh-place showing.

The men's 4x400 relay wrapped up the meet for the Bulls after placing seventh while running in the second heat. Aristil, Fontus, senior Josh Wimbley and sophomore Reshaw Exilien posted a collective time of 3:14.12.

A season-best of 47.25 for the women's 4x100 relay gave them a team point and an eighth-place finish. The 4x800 relay just missed out on scoring points for the Bulls, as sophomores Shaniel Chambers, Nicole Rozario, Yasmin Smith and junior Rachel Etienne ran 9:07.26, which puts them second all-time at USF, just three seconds off the school record set in 2008.

Notre Dame won the BIG EAST title on the men's side with 123 points, while Louisville took home the women's title with 108 points.

The Bulls will try to shore up more NCAA Preliminary Round qualifying marks at the South Florida Invitational May 14 at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
