Marcelo Mantecon Breaks 14 Minutes; Armando Cruz Moves to Florida No. 4 All-Time in Indoor 5K
UPDATED - Spanish River's Preston Sangely runs Florida No. 3 all-time indoor 14:35.01 5K at the New Balance Nationals Indoor.
Marcelo Mantecon (Belen Jesuit) delivered a historic performance at the Nike Indoor Nationals, winning the boys 5000m in 13:57.94, a new meet record.
The time makes Mantecon one of only six high school athletes in history to break 14:00 indoors and establishes a new Florida all-time indoor 5K record, surpassing Patrick Koon's 13:59.69 from Nike Indoor Nationals in 2024.
Mantecon now ranks No. 4 on the U.S. all-time indoor 5K list and No. 2 all-time among U.S. juniors, trailing only Edward Cheserek's 13:57.04 from the 2012 Millrose Games.
Mantecon wasn't the only Belen boy making history. Junior teammate Armando Cruz also delivered a breakthrough performance, running 14:50.19, which moves him to No. 4 on the Florida all-time indoor 5K list.
