3A Girls Rankings:
By: Andy Holmes, Seffner Christian Academy aholmes@scacrusaders.com

Commentary: Toughest task with this year's rankings by far was to predict #1 and #2 teams. In the end I decided to go with the "upset" in picking Lakewood Ranch over the two-time defending champion Chiles team. LWR should put their top 5 in the top 25, which should give them a slight edge over Chiles, but it will be close with Williams and Thomas of Chiles probably cracking the top 5 again. Previous rankings are from last yeaer's state championship meet. Region 1 will again prove to be the toughest, with several top teams not moving on to state due to the depth of the region. Vanguard and Bartram Trail should duke it out for the top spot if only 6 qualify out of the region for state. In Region 2, look for Wiregrass Ranch and King to do battle for the region title, with the slight edge going to the Bulls. In Region 3 LWR is the team to beat with Fort Myers not far behind. There are host of teams behind them among the best in the state. In Region 4, South Fork will look to defend its Region crown. On the individual side, Williams and Thomas battle for the #1 and #2 spot again with the edge going to Williams. Relevant track times are provided, along with finish in last year's State Championship meet

Team Rankings:
Team Name, Region -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Lakewood Ranch, 3 (2) Mustangs return top 5 from last years, and 4 of them were freshmen- ouch!
2. Chiles, 1 (1) Defending state champion return individual champion and runner-up in Thomas and Williams; will be tough for anyone to beat
3. Fort Walton Beach, 1 (3) Could have top 5 in under 20; Lost Brittany Long, who moved to Hawaii, will make up for with incoming freshman Rhianna Moller
4. Creekside, 1 (9) Also return their top 5, including the Rodriguez girls
5. Fort Myers, 3 (4) Will be main competition with LWR in Region 3; Return top runner Spann (6th at state last year)
6. Wiregrass Ranch, 2 (6) May have a tough time moving up any, but possible with the re-emergence of Grey, who had an off cc year, but a good track season
7. Niceville, 1 (12) 7 of top 10 are seniors, but will be led by last year's stud freshman Mosley
8. South Fork, 4 (7) By far the class of Region 4, quietly put together a great run last year
9. King, 2 (15) Hungry Lions are ready to make a push into top 10 led by Dayna Cline
10. Ridgeview, 1 (5) The hardest hit by graduation out of the top 10, but will be back at state
11. Vanguard, 1 (13) Top 5 are seniors, including Shelby Blaes, but will have to get by Bartram Trail for final spot in Region 1
12. Bartram Trail, 1 (NR) Did not make state last year, but will battle Vanguard tooth and nail again if only 6 teams from that region qualify
13. Harmony, 4 (21) May be only team in Region 4 that might give South Fork a run for their money
14. Charlotte, 3 (10) Another trip to state in the offing for last year's #10 team; lost only Gugino to graduation
15. Naples, 3 (15) Hogrefe and Klopf, last year's #1 and #2 runners will be key for the Eagles

4A Girls Rankings:
By: Ryan Raposo, Ferguson HS - rraposo@dadeschools.net

Commentary: Cross Country season is back! So its time to start looking at all of the data we can gather from the end of last season, throw in a little track & field, sprinkle in some summer training with some incoming freshmen and/or transfers and voila! It's a new set of rankings! So let's see what kind of rankings I can cook up for everyone. Like always, if I have any errors, please let me know. (The Previous Ranks for teams refer to the 2009 CC State Championship)

Team Rankings:
Team Name, Region -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Lourdes Academy, 4 - (3) While the database has the Bobcats pinned in 2nd behind Plant, the truth is that not only are they returning the best 1-2-3 from last year's state meet (3 in the top 11), rumor has it that they picked up three top freshmen that have major varsity potential. So be on the lookout for: Bianca Barrios, Cristina Figueras and Lourdes Brea. This should be the team to beat this year. We'll see how strong those rookies compare to the veterans on Friday at FACA.
2. Melbourne, 1 - (2) The Bulldogs have been a podium position team for many years now and this one is no different. Coach Woodbury brings unmistakeably the best 4 in the state (4 in the top returning 24), but that battle for a key 5th runner will determine if they can reach the top of the mountain this season.
3. Plant, 2 - (5) The leading team based off of the computers, these Panthers are just as much in the title hunt at the two teams listed above. Coach Harrison has a few young girls with a lot of potential and should be able to get them to that next level. Don't expect any State Meet jitters this year, they'll be ready to compete!
4. Vero Beach, 1 - (4) Now here is your top 1-2 punch team that should definitely be a top 5 team, but as long as the Fighting Indians have their 4-5 runners stuck in the 20's, I don't think they'll move any higher to crack the top three.
5. Dr. Phillips, 2 - (12) The DP Panthers have been all over the place this summer between a coaching change, the Bridget Blake transfer, and a couple of athletes quitting (or so I've heard), it's hard to get a read on them. Coach Blount (formerly of Satellite) knows how to win a championship so I wouldn't necessarily count this young team out, but until I see some official times they're going to stay as my darkhorse.
6. Mandarin, 1 - (8) The Mustangs are doing something right with their hardwork and their strong pack, so much so that they get the highest ranking from me yet! After an extremely strong showing last year at state, I expect much from this group. Keep it up girls!
T-7. Sarasota Riverview, 2 - (6) The Rams look to be a strong top ten team once again, but the four teams directly below them will be trying their best to knock them off, so be careful gals! They'll need help from their five to stay in this spot.
T-7. Flagler Palm Coast, 1 - (9) Also in this tight mix is the FPC Bulldogs. They are coming with one of the better packs in the state, but aren't quite as fast as some of the teams ahead of them. With some good work they show much upward potential.
T-7. Hagerty, 1 - (17) The Huskies was one of my favorite top teams last year, but weren't as consistent as I would have liked them to be. After a slightly disappointing finish last year, I should hope they are hungry for a new season!
T-10. Wharton, 2 - (10) The Wildcats are in a tight race fighting for a top ten spot and depending on how well they perform, they will either easily move them up or down a couple of spots.
T-10. Sarasota, 2 - (NR) Right in the mix with Wharton are the Sailors of Sarasota. They have the better returning pack, but they're just a hair slower than their competitors. Watch for them to fight for that top ten spot!
T-12. Winter Park, 2 - (1) The fight for the final qualifying spot in Region 2 looks to be between the WP Wildcats and the Boone Braves. But if I know Coach McWilliams, she won't settle for anything less than the best. So they'll be running hard!
T-12. Boone, 2 - (NR) The Braves are in the same spot as WP and definitely don't want to be left home. So the final spot in the new region of death is on!
13. Spruce Creek, 1 - (NR) The Hawks are coming heavy with juniors and that show a lot of potential with a Coach that really believes in them. They should round out your region 1 qualifying teams.
14. Ferguson, 4 - (15) The Falcons return 6 of their 7 from last year's state meet and appear to be healthy after a good summer compared to last year. They should be a solid top 15 team.
15. Spanish River, 3 - (7) The Sharks have fallen a bit off from their finish last season, but when Coach Rothman gets his fastest pack in the state rolling again, they'll be a force to reckon with!
16. St. Thomas, 3 - (11) Depending on the day of the week, these Raiders could easily be a couple of spots higher or lower. Like every year it seems, the teams between 12-20 seem to have a lot of fluctuations.
17. Cypress Bay, 3 - (19) The CB Lightning fallen into that same middle-of-the-pack understanding and could be good enough to be your top region 3 team, we'll just have to wait to see it all play out.
18. West Broward, 3 - (20) These Bobcats are coming with one of the best 1-2 punches around, but lack any depth to really do any top state damage. They should be just good enough for top 20 again.
19. Sunset, 4 - (16) The Knights will be looking strong just like last year, especially with a strong incoming freshman as their #1 (Upcoming Star: Emily Hernandez). They just need to work on the back half of their varsity and they'll be moving nicely!
20. South Dade, 4 - (21) The Buccaneers are coming back with a strong athletic group and should be one of the better Miami teams around. After a highly successful track season, let's see how they stack up.
21. Coral Reef, 4 - (23) A few spots higher than last year, the Barracudas show potential, but have a lot of work to do if they want to crack the top 20 this season!
22. Jupiter, 3 - (NR) The Warriors are the #5 team coming out of region 3 and should be good enough to qualify on this year, but they're just cruising along the backend of the state for now.
23. South Plantation, 3 - (NR) The Paladins have a very young team, but has a lot of work to do on that spread to be able to catch anyone in their region this year.
24. Northwestern, 4 - (NR) Just a spot out of qualifying last year, their 1-4 are all sophomores and so much potential after a strong track season. The lady Bulls just might qualify on this year.

2A Boys Rankings:
By: Austin Scott, Cardinal Gibbons HS - scott@cghsfl.org

Commentary: I've put each team's finish at state last November in parentheses. 2A looks up for grabs enough at the start that I relied heavily on the simulated scoring of returning times. For individual rankings, I used state results from last year first, and then PR's. I don't have much information about injuries/transfers/etc, so please email me before the next rankings pointing me in the right directions.

Team Rankings:
Team Name, Region -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Berkeley Prep, 3 (6) Strong #1 (Rosenbach), 2-4 under 17:10, will any teams have their #5 under 17? (the Buccaneers' is at 17:22). They were 6th last year and graduated just their #1. Only team in 2A with a returning team average below 17. After five straight top-10 finishes at state, are they going to make a run for some medals (they've never won)?
2. Tampa Jesuit, 3 (10) The top 7 returning Tigers are seniors, their 3-7 are within 22 seconds (17:24-17:46), can they push each other to be faster and win their 5th title and first since 2005?
3. Estero, 3 (2) Last year's runner-up, the Wildcats graduated 2 and are still strong up front (16:20, 16:35). Only one senior in top 5
4. Bishop Kenny, 1 (1) The defending state champion Crusaders graduated their top 4, but still have 4 returners under 17:20. They need to find a #5
5. Ransom Everglades, 4 (4) Only team in 2A with 3 returning in the 16's. Last year was the only team in 2A with 5 under 17 in Dade City--finished 4th. Two of top 5 graduated. No seniors on varsity. Future looks bright--this year or next. The gap will make or break them.
6. Archbishop McCarthy, 4 (3) Even without Palermo (transferred back to North Broward) and Wiesler, the Mavericks still have 2 in the 16's and a couple of young guys in the low 17's
7. Rockledge, 2 (16) Strong #1 (16:36), 2-5 in mid-17's
8. Cocoa, 2 (21) A strong pack team under 17:30, but need depth
9. Astronaut, 2 (8) Very strong #1 (16:10), 3 returners in 17's, need a #5
10. Cypress Lake, 3 (7) Craig & Ploplis are best 1-2 tandem in Florida (15:52-15:57)
11. Pensacola Catholic, 1 (--) Team Average: 17:29
12. Cocoa Beach, 2 (13) Top 5 Average time: 17:38
13. West Florida, 1 (22) Top 5 returners are seniors, their average: 17:39
14. Matanzas, 1 (14) 17:36 average, but 1:26 1-5 split
15. Bolles, 1 (15) #1 at 16:18, 2 thru 5 hovering around 18:00 PR's

3A Boys Rankings:
By: David Gardner, Timber Creek HS- david.gardner@ocps.net

Commentary: These results are compiled from good old-fashioned dart throwing and some of last year’s results.
The losers this year are the spectators of the 3A Boys State Championship who will unfortunately
not get to see the best 3A has to offer at Dade City.  FOUR deserving teams will get shafted because of the unbalanced alignment within 3A.  I apologize ahead of time to Region 1 (The newly labeled “Region of Torture”)

Team Rankings:
Team Name, Region -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. CHARLOTTE  (PUNTA GORDA)  # 1 REGION 3 (4) I know, I know…what does this new pollster think he’s doing putting an unproven squad over a major XC powerhouse like Belen? Answer:  Picking the winner of the Boys 3A State Championship.  This squad is greatly improved from last year and coming off an unbelievable track season.  Cardillo is that #1 punch they will need and I think they will collectively  have a better 2-4 than Jesuit.  It will all come down to how healthy this squad is and to #5 and I think Mr. Mendez can handle the pressure.  I would hate to be in a foot race at the end with this group…I like Charlotte to win in a close finish.
2. BELEN JESUIT (MIAMI) # 1 REGION 4 (2) This squad is just too deep and talented to not be the favorite going into the 2010 Season, but depth isn’t everything.  Clemente will make a run for individual honors and come up just short, unfortunately his team will follow suit.  This is in no disrespect to this amazingly stacked group, but I think history repeats itself again this year as the Wolverines finish second fiddle in Dade City.
3. LEON (TALLAHASSEE) # 1 REGION 1 (3) “The MIZ has left the building”  This group won’t be hurt too much by the loss of Mizerek, but then again I don’t think they’ll be repeating as State Champions either.  The Pride have a very strong 1-2 punch, much better than the two teams ahead of them, but their #4 and #5 will have to step up if they want to bask in the glory for a fourth year in a row.
4. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (PENSACOLA)# 2 REGION 1 (1) This is an interesting group…on paper they are the clear favorite based on PR, but the State Championship is run on grass not on paper.  The computer rankings are a little skewed when it comes to their times and although this team is solid their State hopes depend on one major factor, Peter Fricke.  If Fricke can come through when it matters it could be party time in Pensacola, “Booker T” style.
5. WIREGRASS RANCH (WESLEY CHAPEL)  # 1 REGION 2 (6) The 5th position will be a battle between three almost identical squads: Wiregrass, Fort Walton, and Chiles.  I give the edge here to The Ranch because of their 1-2 punch looking slightly better heading into the start of the season.  Coach Loth’s data savvy guidance could help the Bulls crack the Top 4, but the real pressure is on Pulsifer and Reilly to run with the big dogs this year.  A heavy dose of depth will get The Ranch through times of injury for a solid 5th place finish.
6. FORT WALTON  BEACH (FT. WALTON BCH) # 3 REGION 1 (5) I feel like I’m seeing double when comparing Fort Walton and Wiregrass, so here’s how FWB cracks into the Top 5…Run better up top.  This could come in many forms including Junior Brian Stanton who had a marvelous track season, but unfortunately for FWB Stanton is transferring out of State so it will be up to Dearmon and Ammons and Crestview transfer Cameron Sanchez to fill the void and carry the rest of the group to Top 5 consideration.
7. CHILES (TALLAHASSEE)  # 4 REGION 1 (7) The Chiles squad has definitely proven themselves over the years, but this year they get the short end of the stick.  The problem with the wolves is that they are “a one man wolf pack” and their 4 and 5 are not within howling distance of the rest of the teams above them.   Its up to O’Bryant, Vannoy, and Conrad to determine the outcome here.  The buzzard brothers will have to fly high to carry this team above a 7th place finish.
8. OCALA VANGUARD (OCALA)  # 5 REGION 1 (8) The only reason this squad is not in the conversation with The Ranch, FWB, and Chiles is solely based on their 5 spot.  Several of their key returnees are coming off stellar track seasons including an improved Ramaswami who will challenge Slack for the top spot, a speedy Follos who is only going to get better with a good summer, and finally Schafer who is the biggest improvement of them all.  Don’t sleep on this group for a Top 5 finish, if they can fix that weakness in their armor, November 20th will be a Good “Knight” for Vanguard.
9. OKEECHOBEE (OKEECHOBEE) # 2 REGION 4 (9) Probably returning the weakest group in the Top 10, mainly because their paper rankings are a bit deceiving.  I only give them the 9th spot based solely on a potentially strong 1-3, but the water gets murky from there on out.  With the slowest 4-5 in the Top 10 and key parts absent from track season, Okeechobee will be on everyone’s radar to knock out of ranked contention.  The Brahmans will have to bring it this year if they want to hold their ground and improve their “stock”.
10. CREEKSIDE (ST. JOHNS) # 6 REGION 1  (11) There is one factor that fuels a team more than anything to surpass their potential and dedicate themselves completely to a season…finishing 7th in the Region and just missing State the previous year.  This year Jimmy will be joined by his teammates on the course as Creekside beats out big brother Bartram to grab the last remaining spot in the “Region of Torture”.  It also helps that they have the Clark-factor as well.
11. FT. MYERS (FT. MYERS) # 2 REGION 3 (12)
12. BARTRAM TRAIL (ST. JOHNS) # 7 REGION 1, OUT OF STATE CHAMP (13)
13. NICEVILLE (NICEVILLE) # 8 REGION 1,  OUT OF STATE CHAMP. (10)
14. ST. CLOUD (ST. CLOUD) # 3 REGION 4 (14)
15. NAPLES (NAPLES) # 3 REGION 3 (17)
16. CHOCTAWHATCHEE (FT. WALTON BEACH) # 9 REGION 1,  OUT OF STATE CHAMP (15)
17. NAVARRE (NAVARRE) #10 REGION 1,  OUT OF STATE CHAMP (18)
18. LAND O LAKES (LAND O LAKES) # 2 REGION 2 (23)
19. NATURE COAST TECH (BROOKSVILLE) # 3 REGION 2 (21)
20. OVIEDO (OVIEDO) # 4 REGION 2 (20)

Individual Rankings: Compiled from countless statistics, times, data and a little bit of insanity
Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1.  Jimmy Clark, Creekside  (NR) A looming Leon shadow has been lifted, the spotlight is his to cast a legend of his own
2.  Elliot Clemente, Belen Jesuit  (NR) Has to find that extra “swag” to finish in the end and steal the title from Clark
3.  Kamal Koroso, Terry Parker  (NR) In a sea of upperclassman this Super Soph will “Brave” the tide this year
4.  Riley Doherty, Leon  (NR) The Kings of Leon IV? Could be a four-peat, but Riley will have to direct his own title this time
5.  Tyler Cardillo, Charlotte  (NR) Can you say SLEEPER? If its close in the end all bets are off, my money is on this darkhorse
6.  Will Stanford, Leon (NR) This Lion doesn’t lack courage, he could roar his way to victory at The Glades
7.  Harsha Torke, Viera  (NR) In Indian Harsha means “happiness”, A top 10 finish at State will mean just that for Torke
8.  Ryan Stafford, Fort Myers  (NR) The big surprise for this season, Tsunami Sam is on track to destroy the competition!
9.  Peter Fricke, Booker T. Washington  (NR) Fricke’s swan song should be the sweet music of redemption this year
10.  Will Bridges, Edgewater  (NR) Won’t catch Bridges “falling down” this year, I like his chances for a Top 10 finish
11.  Ryan Pulsifer, Wiregrass Ranch (NR)
12.  Joseph Lindsay, Belen Jesuit (NR)
13.  Gary Solomon, Lake Region (NR)

4A Boys Rankings:
By: Jorge Fleitas, Columbus HS - jfleitas@columbushs.com

Commentary: None.

Team Rankings:
  Team Name-  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Columbus (1) Hellions won’t miss a beat this season as they should have another successful season with a great chance of repeating as State champions, but they will have their work cut out for them with teams like Dr. Phillips, HB Plant, and John I Leonard gunning for the top spot.
2. Dr. Phillips (2) Panthers bring back there top 5 under 10:04 in the 3200. Making them the team with the strongest 5th man.
3. HB Plant (3) Plant is arguably one of the best teams in the state of Florida, a disapointed showing last year at states motivates them in 2010. Bo Nalson seems to be healthy and should crack into the top 10 this year.
4. John I Leonard (4) John I Leonard has one of the most dynamic 1-3 in 4A a solid #4 puts all the pressure on the 5th man. Look at Ryan Pickering to make a run at the individual state title.
5. Colonial (5) Talk to anyone associated to this team and every single person will tell you how much they believe in their young guns
6. Sarasota (6) Not having a front runner is their weakness.  However with 4/5 runners being Seniors, maybe veteran saviness can get them in the top 5.  With that said, 4 & 5 have some work to do.
7. Boone (7) With such a strong 1-2 they could contend if their supporting cast steps up.
8. St. Thomas Aquinas (8) Their front 3 are a step behind the 1st tier teams but a nice 1-6 pack puts them in this #8 spot.
9. Winter Park (9) The loss of Nick Papa is devestating.  They will need someone to really step up into that crucial 5th spot.
10. Park Vista  (10) I believe the Park Vista Senior class will steer themselves into a top 10 team finish in November.
11. Spruce Creek (11) The Creeks Juniors Young and Kathman could lead this team into a top 10 spot before the end of 2010
12. Seminole (12) Seminole has individual Chase chasing  the state title, and a good 2-3 puts you in the hunt for top 10
13. Vero Beach (13) They are lead by Dominic Patrick and a monster Junior class 2-5. Look for them to have a push at the state title in 2011.
14. Lake Brantley (14) They are a strong squad and their  #1 Otiniel Teixeira should break into the top 10 in cross country this year. if he does they are a top 10 team.
15. Fleminng Island  (15) They may be out of this year's State race, but with their returning top 5 with a 45 sec spread, they'll definitely have a hand in winning their district this year.
