JAMESVILLE, N.Y. - The University of South Florida cross country teams kicked off their 2010 schedule with a trip to New York for the BIG EAST preview, the same location where the BIG EAST Championships will be held in late October. The men placed third with 83 points in the 6K race, while the women came in fifth in the 5K race with 118 points. Syracuse won both events, scoring 20 points in the men's race and 31 in the women's.
Junior Phillip Wise led the men's team with a time of 19:27.5 to score 11 points. He was followed by senior Pedro Carela, who scored 13 points behind a 19:40.7. Juniors Lucas Simari (15 points, 19:54.2) and Jon Bing (21 points, 20:31.7) and freshman Connor Bauer (23 points, 20:40.0) rounded out the scoring for the Bulls.
On the women's side, junior Nicole Rozario was the Bulls top finisher, claiming ninth place in 19:26.9. Fellow junior Yasmin Smith finished in 15th with a time of 19:45.9. Juniors Shaniel Chambers (30 points, 20:44.2), Devin Spoerle (31 points, 20:52.4) and Christine Johnston (33 points, 21:18.9) claimed the other spots in USF's top five.
The cross country teams will return to the course this Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Florida Invitational in Gainesville.
