Top Ten Individuals in Florida: October 4, 2010

This will no doubt raise some discussion and debate, but here is one man's take on who the top ten male and female high schoolers in Florida at this point in the year.  It is looking to be an amazingly deep year for Florida for both genders and Foot Locker Nationals should be a lot of fun!  The big telling races this weekend were flrunners.com Invitational and Great American with most of Florida's best split between these two.  Between those two races and a bit of Bartram Bale-n-Trail thrown in we can get a pretty good picture!

Girls

FLR 11 made this one pretty easy.  Wollrath competing against those girls at Great American and beating some really strong out-of-state competition like Samantha George of North Carolina convinced me to give her the nod.  But really if she was at flrunners... who knows.  The same could be said about Lilly Williams (won Bale-n-Trail) or Stephanie Kurgatt (won Cougar Challenge).

1. Kathryn Fluehr (Communiy School of Naples)

2. Julie Wollrath (Holy Trinity)

3. Bridget Blake (Dr. Phillips)

4. Erika Fluehr (Community School of Naples)

5. Stephanie Kurgatt (Maclay)

6. Nicole Carpio (Random Everglades)

7. Kacy Smith (Estero)

8. Shelby Davidson (Cocoa Beach)

9. Lilly Williams (Chiles)

10. Stephanie Schappert (Pope John Paul)

Boys

Okay... Pickering beats del Valle, Clark beats Pickering.  Clark gets the top slot.  That's what this draft has, but my initial draft had Great American champion Armando del Valle at the top.  That is one heck of an accomplishment to win Great American--just like when Brian Atkinson won it last year.  But the individual field at Great American was not as strong up front as it was on the girls side--despite having 36 break 16 (much more than the 21 last year)--and there were some really huge PRs.  So I think you've gotta go with the head-to-head.  Would have liked to see how Eduardo Garcia would have done at either FLR 11 or Great American also.

1. Jimmy Clark (Creekside)

2. Ryan Pickering (John I. Leonard)

3. Armando Del Valle (Columbus)

4. Max del Monte (Chamberlain)

5. Elliot Clemente (Belen Jesuit)

6. Nick Posada (Winter Park)

7. David Kilgore (Holy Trinity)

8. Phil Duncan (Boone)

9. Mark Gulesian (Columbus)

9. Griffin Jaworski (Trinity Prep)

10. Tyler Cardillo (Charlotte)

So that's the way I see it right now... debate away!    Team list to come!
