Middle School FHSAA Regional Qualifiers - The Numbers

The data on middle school athletes advancing through FHSAA districts to regional qualification isn't shocking or unexpected, but provides an observation that aligns with participation trends and gender development, not only in Florida, but perhaps across the nation. The total numbers offer some interesting insights into the Florida Track & Field scene and are worth paying attention to.

Across the 15 individual events and 64 districts, 186 middle school athletes qualified for FHSAA regionals. Of those, 155 were girls, and just 31 were boys, meaning boys accounted for only about 20% of the middle school qualifiers. This disparity was consistent across classifications. In 1A, which accounts for the majority of qualifiers, there were 164 athletes in total (143 girls, 21 boys). 2A showed a similar pattern with 50 total (43 girls, 7 boys). The larger classifications (3A and 4A) had minimal middle school representation overall, combining for just 12 athletes, with girls again outnumbering boys.
