Iona Prep grad Matt DiBuono places 3rd at USA Champs

Matt DiBuono, a graduate of Iona Prep in New Rochelle, NY and Fordham University, placed 3rd in the hammer throw yesterday at The USA Championships.  His finish could qualify him for the World Championships this year in Korea and the end of August.

The winner of the event was Kibwe Johnson of Nike, who's 263-06 toss secures his spot on the team.  Second place went to Michael Mai of the US Army who threw 245-00.  DiBuono was 3rd in 239-08.  Only Johnson has the A standard to qualify, meaning that for Dibuono to qualify either Mai or DiBuono will need to get the A standard before August 8th.  He is 5 meters short right now.

Jen Rhines, a 1992 Liverpool, NY graduate, placed 3rd in the 10,000 in 31:30.37, only losing to two of the best US runners of all time - Shalane Flanigan and Kara Goucher.  Flanagan won in 30:59.97 and is currently ranked 2nd in the world.

Rhines has now made another world team.  She competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in the Marathon.
