New York graduates win four events, place 2nd in seven others

The Notre Dame Elmira, NY graduate won her first national title

"Elmira native Molly Huddle has some big races in her future, including the World Championships later this year and potentially the Olympics next year.

However, her triumph Friday night at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., certainly qualified as a milestone moment in a career filled with big victories."

Jen Suhr takes 2nd in pole vault with 15-01 clearance
Fredonia, NY grad qualifies for another world championships.  She is the American record holder in the event at 16-01.5 and earned the silver medal at the last Olympic Games

"The former Roberts Wesleyan College star, who has been battling injuries all season, finished second to Kylie Hutson, who cleared 15 feet, 3 inches.Riga's Jennifer Suhr had her five-year streak of national titles snapped in the pole vault Sunday at the U.S. track championships in Eugene, Ore."

Maria Michta and Teresa Vaile go 1-2 in 20K race walk
Michta is the NY State record holder who from Sachem, NY who won the event in 1:34:51.  Vaill graduated from Pine Plains, NY 1981.  She placed 2nd in 1:35:35.

"The future of American race walking was present and well-accounted for Sunday as Trevor Barron and Maria Michta won the men’s and women’s titles in the 20-kilometer events run concurrently at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The 18-year-old Barron clocked a personal best of 1:23:25.10 on the course that was primarily on Agate Street, with the start and finish in Hayward Field. Michta, three days past her 25th birthday, was 100 seconds under her personal best in taking the women’s race in 1:34:51.47, five minutes faster than a year ago when she was the youngest winner of the event in a decade."

Jen Rhines takes 3rd in 10K in 31:30.37, 4th in 5K in 15:19.12
Rhines graduated from Liverpool, NY in 1992 and was an Olympian in 2004 in the marathon
 

 

 

Matt DiBuono places 3rd in hammer
The Iona Prep and Fordham University grad needs to throw 5 meters further to earn his spot on the world team

 

 

Eddie Owens 2nd in steeple in 9:04.78
Owens is a 2011 graduate from Packer Collegiate who's heading to Princeton in the fall

"Eddie Owens has accomplished plenty of significant marks this year and throughout his career. But this weekend the Packer Collegiate star can claim a special and elusive honor.

He will run the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the USATF Junior Nationals Saturday at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Placing in the top two will earn him the chance to represent the U.S. for the first time in the Junior Pan-American Games in July.

 

“I really want that USA singlet,” Owens said. “I’ve been craving that for a real long time. I think it’s the coolest thing. I just want it sooner rather than later.”

Mary Cain takes 2nd in steeple, too young to compete at world juniors
The Bronxville, NY freshman ran 4:23.59 to place 2nd but she is only 15 years old.  You must be 16 to compete at World Juniors.

 

 

Phyllis Francis runs 52.93 for 2nd in Jr. 400m
Francis graduated from Catherine McCauley HS in the Bronx in 2010 and just finished her freshman year at Oregon.  She is the NYS record holder at 600m.

"Elsewhere in the junior meet, Oregon freshman Phyllis Francis also qualified for the Pan American Games by running a personal best in the 400m for the second day in a row. Francis crossed the line in 52.93, which was good enough for second place behind Kansas’ Diamond Dixon in 52.67.

Francis’ mark was the seventh-fastest women’s 400m time in school history.

“I was starting to get scared when I saw how far behind I was, but I made sure to turn it on the last leg and finish strong,” Francis said. “I am happy with the outcome, seeing as I am more of a 4×400 meter and 800 meter racer. I have some fine-tuning to do before the Pan-Am.”"

Karen Henning takes 2nd in hammer (184-05)
The 2010 St. Anthony's grad continues to have a great year.  She just finished her freshman year at LSU

"Henning set a new personal record in the hammer throw with her series-best mark of 184-5 on her second throw of the afternoon as she eclipsed her previous best of 183-2 entering the competition. She also threw 184-4 on her fifth throw of the series for her best performance to date as a Lady Tiger.

A native of Kings Park, N.Y., Henning finished exactly seven feet behind the 2011 U.S. Junior Champion in Atlanta's Shelby Ashe, who took home the gold medal with her winning throw of 191-5."  FULL ARTICLE HERE

 

 

Nicole Cummings takes 5th in Jr. LJ with 19-11.5 leap
The 2010 Peekskill, NY grad had a very nice freshman year for the Univserity of Miami, scoring points in the ACC Championships.

 

 

Alec Faldermeyer wins Jr. hammer with 241-02 toss
The 2010 Minisink, NY grad now competes for UCLA

 

 

Brigetta Barrett jumps 6-04.75, ranked 5th in the world
Barrett attended RC Ketcham in Dutchess County, NY her freshman and sophomore year before moving to Texas.  She now competes for The University of Arizona.  Her jump of 1.95m is ranked 5th in the world.

"Arizona’s Brigetta Barrett continued an amazing season by winning the high jump, and Tucsonan Bernard Lagat added to his prolific résumé with a victory in the 5,000 meters Friday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore."  FULL ARTICLE HERE

 



 

 

Natasha Hastings runs 51.14 for 5th in 400m
Hastings graduated from AP Randolph HS in Manhattan in 2004.  She won an Olympic Gold Medal in the 4x400 in 2008.
