Mantecon turns an 'Off Night' into Florida History at HOKA

Marcelo Mantecon of Belen Jesuit turns an 'Off Night' into Florida History and now sets his eyes on the Brooks PR Invitation 2-Mile on Sunday in Renton, WA.

Not every race goes according to plan, even for one of Florida's and the nation's best.

Marcelo Mantecon entered Friday night's Championship Boys One Mile at the HOKA Festival of Miles in St. Louis looking to add another elite performance to his growing resume. Instead, he found himself battling through a race that wasn't quite his best on one of the sport's biggest stages.

Still, the result was far from ordinary. He finished eighth overall, splitting 3:44.48 through 1500 meters, good for fifth at that checkpoint before crossing 1600 meters in 4:02.05 and completing the mile in 4:04.70.

While the result may not have been what he hoped for, his performance added another chapter to his and to Florida distance running history. His 4:02.05 for 1600 meters established a new Florida all-time boys record and a new Florida junior-class record. His 4:04.70 mile also moved him to No. 5 on the state's all-time mile list and No. 1 all-time among Florida juniors.

For many athletes, an off night can be difficult to accept. For Mantecon, however, the silver lining was substantial. Even on a day when he wasn't at his sharpest, he still produced one of the fastest performances ever by a Florida high school runner.

And he won't have to wait long for another opportunity. He is scheduled to return to action Sunday, June 7, in the Championship Boys 2-Mile at the 2026 Brooks PR Invitational in Renton, Washington. Although he hasn't run a 2 Mile this outdoor season, he owns an 8:35.33 3200-meter personal best from the Arcadia Invitational this season that currently ranks No. 2 nationally.

That mark already stands as the top junior-class performance in Florida history and ranks No. 2 all-time in state history overall. Only Leon's Patrick Koon has run faster, clocking 8:31.77 during his victory at the 2024 Brooks PR Invitational.
