The 2026 AAU Junior Olympics closes out the 2026 age group Track & Field meets at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, on the first of August. MileSplit will be streaming the races beginning at 9:00 am on August 1. After the JOs, all of our attention will be focused on the upcoming 2026 Florida High School and Middle School Cross Country seasons. The state has a rich tradition of talented distance runners. How good are you? What will it take to be ranked in the Top 20 Girls' 5K in Florida in the 2026 Cross Country season?
We revisited the 2015-2025 Florida Top 20 rankings and compared the No. 1-ranked time through the 20th-ranked time for each season. 2025 was a banner year for Florida, with 25 girls running sub-18:00 in the state. It was only the third year that a girl ran sub-17:00 and the first year that it took a sub-18:00 run to break into the top 20.
The fastest 5K cross-country time was recorded in 2021, when Caroline Wells of Winter Springs HS ran a 16:40.20 to win the Hagerty Invitational in Oviedo. The second sub-17.00 run was by IMG's Tatum David at the Desert Twilight XC Festival, Queen Creek, AZ, in 2020. Last year, Madison Muller of Sarasota Riverview HS became only the 3rd girl to break 17:00, running a 16:50.40 in the 4A Region 3 race. Muller went on to win the 4A state title in Tallahassee with a 17:37.70
The average time from 2015 to 2025 for the number one-ranked runners was 17:11.67. The spread from the number one-ranked average time to the twentieth-ranked average time was 66.56 seconds. Two runners across the 2015-2025 seasons were ranked No. 1 twice. Rafaella Gibbons of Winter Park HS led the state in 2014 and 2015. Carly McNatt of Holy Trinity and IMG was at the top of the rankings in 2018 and 2019.
Bottom line is, if you are going to get into the top 20 girls rankings in the 2026 cross country season, you will probably need to run sub-18:20. To be the No. 1 runner, you will need to run sub-17:15.
