Rheinhardt Harrison: From Florida HS Champion to the USATF Podium
After missing qualification for the NCAA Division 1 Championships in May, Northern Arizona University's Rheinhardt Harrison found his redemption at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships.
The men's 1500m final was a highly tactical race from the gun, as is often the case. It resulted in a tightly bunched pack heading into the bell lap. Harrison entered the final somewhat under the radar, having sneaked in on time from the third semifinal, and sat back in 11th place with 400 meters to go. However, from the 1100m mark, he closed with a 51.52 last 400m, crossing the line in 3:50.65 to secure 3rd place, finishing just behind winner Nathan Green (3:50.27) and runner-up Vince Ciattei (3:50.32).
Before landing on a senior U.S. championship podium, Harrison solidified his legacy as one of the top Florida high school boys' distance runners of all time. A 2022 graduate of Nease High School, he was a multi-time state champion and remains the first and only high school boy in Florida history to run a sub-4:00 mile.
Harrison broke the 4:00 minute barrier by clocking a 3:59.33 at the Golden South Series #2 meet on June 3, 2022, becoming the 16th U.S. high school boy overall to accomplish the feat.
During his time at Nease HS, he won multiple FHSAA 4A state titles, including victories in the 800m (1:48.62) in 2022, the 1600m (4:08.14), and 3200m (9:02.26) in 2021, and three 4A State cross country titles: 2019 (15:24.47), 2020 (15:08.72), and 2021 (15:03.60).
Following high school, Harrison initially competed at the University of Oregon, where he dealt with some injuries before eventually transferring to Northern Arizona University. Since arriving at Northern Arizona, he has found his rhythm, contributing to an NCAA indoor title in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) and laying down personal bests in both the 800m (1:46.93) and the 1500m (3:36.28). His bronze medal run in the 1500m serves as a major statement that the former Florida prep star is healthy, refreshed, and ready to compete with the nation's best.
