BCAA Preview: St. Thomas Aquinas Favorites

On-Site Coverage

The BCAA Championship will go off at Quiet Waters Park this Thursday. It is one of the largest conferences in the state with 32  schools competing. Our photographer John Calderon will be on-site for coverage.

Boys

After an absolutely monsterous personal best at Pre-State last week it is now Andrew Iglesias of Pembroke Pines Charter who is the favorite.  The sophomore broke out with by running almost a minute faster than his time at UF a month ago and 49 seconds faster than the week before at Disney. Iglesias was the runner-up for the middle school state championship his 8th grade year and looks to be a major factor on the high school level going forward after that breakthrough. He is ranked 8th in the latest flrunners.com/FACA 2A Boys rankings.

On the team front it looks to be a show of force by St. Thomas Aquinas, who most likely will get their top five into the top ten.

Girls

If you thought the boys race was St. Thomas Aquinas heavy, the girls is just ridiculous. The #1 ranked 4A Girls team has the potential to clean sweep this thing, especially if Christina Kalias manages to make a return to the roster. She has been out since Spanish River, at which point she was the team's #1 runner. Alex Payne, who finished 23rd with an 18:54 at Prestate, is looking to be the top individual.

West Broward's Isabelle Amaro, who is the back-to-back defending champion at this meet, will be looking to make sure St. Thomas Aquinas does not get that perfect 15.  She is seeded well back in 5th, but we haven't seen a lot of her this year (only two meets in the database) so who knows if she could possible content for the win.

Katherine MacNeal-led Cypress Bay looks to be the runner-up in this one with a strong 1-4 split.
