McDermott's A Gator

Several days after anchoring the Lakewood Ranch ladies to a state championship in the 4x800m relay senior Devin McDermott announced she will be running collegiately for the University of Florida. She says the recruiting process was definitely overwhelming, but at the end of the day she had to focus on what was going to benefit her most and which place just felt right.

“The main reason that it took so long for me to decide is because I didn’t quite have the times that were needed to run for the schools I wanted to attend. I had a setback in cross with an injury so it really all came down to how well I did in track this past season. I didn’t want to jump into a school that my heart wasn’t really into. I just had to run my best and see what God had in store for me, and of course, it ended up being UF, which I am very thankful for. “

At the beginning of the process McDermott was considering out of state schools such as Kentucky and Colorado State as well as the Gators’ rivals in Tallahassee.  She loved what she saw on her official visit from the team to the coaching staff and believes they are going to provide a strong support system for the next few years and take care of her as an athlete.

“Their program is strong and their success is evident in their previous accomplishments. I feel that I have lots of room to improve and I am confident that UF will really allow me to reach my full potential. “

McDermott plans to major in telecommunications and has aspirations of becoming a sports broadcaster. She is looking forward to experiencing everything that UF has to offer.

“I'm really pumped to start training with such a talented group of girls, as well as really getting to know them all. Of course, traveling and racing in all new locations is going to be awesome. The school spirit and pride at UF is insane and one of the reasons I fell in love with the school. I can't wait to rep that orange and blue. Go Gators.”
