In the past five years, the Holy Trinity boys cross country team has finished either first or second. It had been a fight with Trinity Prep for the top spot in 2009 and 2010, but the Tigers got the job done in 2011. The team placed four of it's top five runners in the top nine. Numbers five and six finished 17th and 21st. Coach Butler's squad loses three members of the state championship squad to graduation, but has a strong four-some of seniors leading this year's group, Alex Brown, Tristan Kattenberg, Cole Oliver, and Coleman Sperando.
Brown, Kattenberg, and Oliver all have a slew of state level experience. Brown ran as a 7th grader on the 2007 runner-up team. He placed 94th that year, and has run every state meet since, improving greatly over the years including his 9th place finish last year. Oliver has been a part of every state meet since 2008, while Kattenberg the relative newcomer, has placed 19th and 7th at his two state meet appearances. Butler believes those three along with Sperando could all run in the 15 minute range this year. Rounding out the rest of the team will be sophmore Andrew Cacciatore and a trio of 8th graders who have plenty of potential.
At Holy Trinity, depth is never a problem. Coach Butler oversees the middle schoolers as well, and guides their rise to the varsity levels. Combine that with early morning workouts and extensive summer training, the Tigers are always experienced and well prepared. Holy Trinity should see usual suspect Trinity Prep battle it out with them throughout the season. They will see each other at several meets, then in the postseason for a regional showdown before the state final.
Coach Butler Says...
"The boys have four good seniors that will lead us this year, Alex Brown, Tristan KAatenberg, Cole Oliver, and Coleman Sperando. They could all run in the 15's this year. Coleman has not had the breakout race yet and runs better in training, so when he does break out , it will be huge. Then we have Andrew Cacciatore the sophomore that had a great freshman year running mid 16's and should be a 16 flat guy this year. Our 6-8 right now are three 8th graders that have all run under 17:30 for 5k and under 4:57 for the 1600. So we are pretty deep and I hope by season end we have eight guys that will be 16:45 and under.
