Scouting Report: Trinity Prep Boys

Trinity Prep and Holy Trinity have had some intense battles in 1A over the past five years. The Saints are coming off a runner-up finish to Holy Trinity in 2011, after beating the Tigers in 2010 and 2009. If Coach Ken Vinal's squad wants a chance at the top spot again it starts up front with senior leader Daniel Salas. Salas has been a part of the program since 2008 and has seen two runner-up finishes to Holy Trinity and two team championships. As an 8th grader he finished 41st and followed that up with three top ten finishes going, 6th, 8th, and second last year to teammate Ryan Gousse. Gousse and fellow senior Sam Goldberg graduated leaving Trinity Prep with five of their top seven returners from a year ago. Behind Salas, Junior Paul Reggentin is the top returner finishing 16h in 2011 with a time of 16:59.36. Sophomore Tristan Rhodes, junior Sam Millson and freshman brother Jesse Milson round out the top five.

Daniel Salas has the fastest times from the 2012 outdoor season in both 3200 meters and 1600 meters. Salas placed seventh at the 1A state meet with a time of 9:45.05 way off of his season best time of 9:17.51. The senior was also third at state in the mile in 4:19.98. Gordon Pace and the Millson brothers have both run under 4:40 in 2011, while two others are around the 5:00 mark.

This might not be the most talented Trinity Prep team in recent years, but you can never count the Saints out. Holy Trinity looks to be the favorite in 1A, but with these two teams facing off at regionals and then states the blood is definitely heated and neither like to lose, especially to each other.

Coach Vinal Says...

"We are looking pretty good. The boys have all worked hard this summer and made some nice improvements. We have a somewhat deep team, but there are a few new young guys that might be able to make the top seven. I am confident we will have a successful season.

"Our home meet on September 8th and Flrunners XIII are our key meets in the regular season."

"Our main goal of course is to win a district, region, and state championship, but we will need more than one runner to improve significantly to challenge Holy Trinity. Our region has some very good teams, first and foremost is Circle Christian. As a coach, I want to see the team take care of what they can control by performing at their best and pushing each other to improve."
