2A State Meet Preview

Disclaimer: The predictions below are based on the cumulative season and how the following athletes have performed throughout the year. Other factors taken into consideration are how they ran at the state meet last year, regional/district performances, etc. These are my opinions and mine alone. Consider this a follow-up to the pre-season outlook I wrote. Please enjoy!

Team Preview

(G) 3 months ago this battle was looking really intriguing with upstart Episcopal and powerhouse Florida High. However, reality has struck and injuries have plagued some key members of the Episcopal squad. Yet, they are still in the hunt despite missing their 18.5 points from last year in Emily Ingham (stress fracture). Florida High remains at the top with the Kayla Parker and Kellie Morrison duo leading the way. The combo will likely score between 38-45 points ALONE and they will have some outside help some strong field event + relay performances. One thing that separates the two teams is the unpredictability of sprints/relays. Count on Episcopal getting their points from the pole vault (16-18), 800 (8-10), 1600 (10), 3200 (18-23), and 4x800m (8-10) relay. Also, they have the \"homecourt advantage\" factor playing in their corner. If everyone is on, then anything could happen. The rest of the top 5 is pretty hectic but expect to see Pope John Paul, Woodham, Bishop Kenny and some others in there.

(B) 3 months ago Godby and Glades Central's looked like a runaway 1 and 2…until the season started. Slowly but surely, Tampa Jesuit has splashed onto the radar with their awesome distance group and a couple throwers. It's a shame they don't have the 4x1mile and DMR as scored events at the state meet but they do have the 4x800m, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m which is where Jesuit is likely to acquire anywhere from 38-50 points. Add in 400m stud Hunter Classen and some valuable points in the shot and we have a state champion. Glades will not go down without a fight however as they always seem to save their best for last. Somehow they are always the only team who keeps a low profile all year then explodes onto the scene. I like their points from the hurdles and relays. Godby has weapons across the board from soph sensation Joe Franklin (800, 1600, 4x4) to pole-vaulter Lavon Downs (15-00) to thrower Frank Grimes (shot and disc). Orlando Jones, a sleeper in many books, has a strong crop of 400/800 guys and relay teams that will be able to make some noise as well. As usual, the 4x400m relay will decide our champion. Winner scores 58+ points.

Event Previews

4x800m- (G)- Unlike last year, no team has put a stamp out in this event. Pope John Paul leads the way with their season best of 9:42 @ the Disney Relays followed closely by Episcopal's at 9:47.30 performance at their regional meet. With open 2:19,2:21, and 2:22 legs; PJP is the clear favorite despite having lost to Jensen Beach @ Regionals. Challengers come by way of Bishop Kenny, Jensen Beach, and Bishop Moore filling out part of the podium. Remember, all it takes is a couple of breakout legs and 2 other good days.

Cardinal Newman 10:05.56

4x800- (B)- The race is for 2nd place in this one with Tampa Jesuit already establishing themselves as one of the top track distance programs in Florida history with their top 10 national performances in the relays. Jesuit easily has 7:47-7:50 capability if all legs have a "state-meet" kind of day. Look for the chase pack to be led by those guys in purple jerseys; Hernando. But wait..wasn't there a team that placed in the top 3 last year and returned all their legs? Yes, my friends. Cocoa Beach, led by the Gates brothers will be back with a vengeance and look to improve on their 8:05 regional mark and third place finish from a year ago. The Martucchi brothers of Hernando form a strong 1-2 punch that could give Jesuit a small scare…for a little while. After that look for Jones, Belen Jesuit, Woodham, Godby, and others to all fall into place.

110m Hurdles- Damarius Carroll, the defending champion in this event, made a HUGE statement at region one crossing the line with a new PR in 14.22 indicating a possible sub 14 performance at the state meet. 100m Dash (G)- Kellie Morrison + Scottesha Miller= a barn burner. Both have only run up to their competition and won. The two come in with the fastest times among their 2A competitors and are 2nd and 10th in the state rankings. Miller moved down from 3A and will look to add to her collection with another 100m title, this time in 2A.

100m Dash (B)- CJ Who? Clifford Spiller, one of the top running back recruits in the country, comes in with the fastest season time (10.44) and looks poised to pick up where he left off last year and collect his first state title. Will anyone catch this speedster heading to Clemson? The most viable candidate will be someone from region 4. Times spread 10.60-10.77 down there and anyone of those guys could rise atop the podium. All are viable candidates to knock the king of his throne.

1600m Run (G)- Maggie Traylor,Laura Hempel, and Katherine Carrington come in here with identical season bests (5:11). The latter just having a big PR @ regionals winning by 15+ sec. Traylor got the upper hand against Hempel in their regional match up and carries the faster PR (5:06.xx) of the three. Hempel may be poised for a breakout however as she seems to save her best for last. The three should provide a very entertaining race if everything plays out like it should.

1600m Run (B)- Times change but people don't. Joe Franklin and James Osborne are still the clear favorites here. We got a little taste of things to come when Osborne and Franklins dueled at the Bob Hayes Invite w/ Franklin closing in 59.xx, running 4:16, and beating Osborne by a couple ticks. Osborne will likely try to run away from Franklin and ensure a fast pace in order to take a little bit from Franklin's deadly kick. Yes, there are other people in this race…like freshman All-American Connor Revord who will be right in the mix along with Moeller of Bishop Moore and triathlete-turned runner Will Pearce of Bolles as well as McCarthy of B. Jesuit who\'s having a breakout season. Lots of guys may choose to drop the mile (last year saw FIVE runners do so for other events). This year's club will likely include L. Russel.

4x100m Relay (B)- Common sense says Rickards will win if everything goes smoothly having posted the fastest time in 2A (41.60) @ their City Championship meet but my gut feeling says Glades Central will be back to claim what is theirs and defend their title. Handoffs here are pretty much 75% of the relay and anything could happen on any given today. If so then throw in Raines, Madison County, and Dunbar as outside challengers.

400m Dash (G)- Lecia Brown of Suncoast has blipped back onto the radar after her triple crown victory at regionals (100,200,400) and her 56.95 performance. The defending champion looks ready to roll. Like the boys, the girls 400 should be very deep with the majority coming from the "Region of Death" in Region 1. Look for Rollins of Rickards, followed by long-strider Danielle Griffin of Ribault, Emde of Pope John Paul and a few others between 56-59 for what could provide for the deepest 400m race of all the classifications combined.

400m Dash (B)- Another very exciting race here on tap with 12 of the 16 qualifiers having already posted sub 50 second marks. The most consistent of the bunch has been Mario Pickett of Jones who has 6 marks between 48.6 to 49.6 this year. Senior Trent Harrigan of Florida High could have something to say before things are said and done as well with his 48.46 posted last week right along with Mr. Ferguson of Suncoast. The rest of this quality group of guys contains Pickett's teammate Jonathan Marks, breakout talent H. Classen of Jesuit, Dunbar of Raines, Teter of Bishop Kenny, and Lumpkin of East Gadsen and then some. Medaling in this race will be an honor!

300m Intermediate Hurdles As usual, Belen Jesuit has pulled another strong 300m hurdler out of the word-work. This time in the form of Peter Piedman who comes in with a season best of 38.59. 800m Run (G)- Ironic how things have turned out here. 3 of the top 4 returnees from last year; Tiarra Harrell from Bolles, Jenna Redfearn from Pope John Paul, and Laura Steele from Episcopal have all been setback someway this season through injury or illness (Achilles, illness, IT Band). No one had separated themselves from the pack….until Laura Steel popped a 2:18 off at Regionals. Look for another tight race here. The youngster from Jensen Beach, Kayla Conrad, comes in with the 2nd fastest time in 2A (2:19.60) and could sneak up on these seasoned veterans for her first state title. Conrad placed 8th last year at the state meet…in the 400 (58.99 speed)! If a fast past is set, I like Conrad's chances. Tossup: Kayla Conrad/Laura Steel

800m Run (B) - Akins from Jesuit will likely be cheering for teammate Osborne to not only beat Joseph Franklin but to ensure a fast race. Why? Because Franklin has yet to complete a fast double in the 1600m/800m and would be doing so for the first time here. Mike Akins comes in with the 2nd fastest time to Joe, 1:54.75, but will be fresh for this race. The most talented of the bunch outside of Franklin is easily Pierre Jeanty who is coming off a region 3 win over Akins and a 1:54.79 performance. Anyone who witnessed Franklin's region performance (1:52.74) will tell you he will be almost impossible to beat. This is an unusually deep year in 2A as 13 of the 16 qualifiers have posted sub 2 min times so look for a close spread from 1st-8th (3-5 sec). Those looking from the outside in, include the Gates brothers of Cocoa Beach, Calvin Hayes who placed 6th year as a sophomore, Harley from St. Pete Catholic, and then everybody else.

200m Dash (G) - Part 2 of the Miller/Morrison duel and it should be just as good if not better then the first. Miller has the faster PR, 23.99 to Morrison's 24.25, but Morrison will be depended on by teammates to help secure their state title run. Also, Lecia Brown (24.42) will be coming into likely what will be her 5th race of the night but can not be counted out either. Daniela Griffin should also be mentioned with that space-eating stride.

Standing in his way this time will be Monal of Glades Central..again! 3200m Run (G)- Maggie Traylor comes in with a season best of 10:48 posted at the Mobile Meet of Champions, but she will be coming back from a tough 4x800m/1600m double. This may leave the window of opportunity open for Emily Houston of Jensen Beach (11:12) and Maggie's sister Katie Traylor to come in. M. Traylor will also be depended on and motivated to pick up those 10 pts towards a team title. If Traylor completes the 1600m/3200m double a star will be born. Stay tuned!

3200m Run (B)- James. Matthew. Luke. No, this isn't a scripture from the Bible it's the 2A 3200m final. This time the James Osborne v. Luke Russell battle picks up where it left off during cross-country. Russell of BK will likely be coming in fresh and facing a guy who just ran a tough 1600m race. He will likely latch onto Osborne from the get-go hold on (déjà vu). A pre-season injury set him back but Russell is determined to close his career out on top. Matt Hensley, another fellow senior, will also be going toe to toe with Luke and James. Echarte, a soph of Belen Jesuit, looks poised for one of those race-of-their-lives kind of performances. That is if he drops the 1600m. Scrivner from Tampa Jesuit, Martucci of Hernando, and soph Blake of Berkely Prep are medal candidates as well.

4x400m Relay (G)- Surprise, surprise…Florida High enters with the fastest time in 2A this year with a 3:58.04 posted more than a MONTH ago. Think they'll be faster by Saturday? Me too. A terrible handoff gave Woodham the upset over them at regionals, but don't expect them to fall off again. PJP will give them a run for their money along with Woodham…again and Ribault.

4x400m Relay (B)- Godby. Jones. Glades Central. Jesuit. Suncoast. Archbishop McCarthy. The BIG 6 here will likely finish in the top 6. Not sure in which order but Glades, as usual, is the defending champion. Ironic as it is, Godby, Jones, Glades, and Jesuit will all be depending on this race to clinch or pick up some desperation points towards the team title. Also, does anyone else remember last year when Jones entered as one of the top seeds but was later disqualified? I'm sure they do, and will definitely be motivated by it. I just hope someone tells them all what the team scores are going into the race!
