Race Recap

It was a beautiful morning for cross country running at Seminole State College - Oviedo Campus home of the 2012 Hagerty Invitational. Nearly two dozen teams took part in the three lap course. For some school's it will be their district meet course, for others it was a chance to get some more racing under their belts as the postseason looms. On-Site coverage sponsored by Track Shack.

The girls race looked to be a very close and anticipated battle between Bryce Seymour of Hagerty and Bridget Blake of Dr. Phillips. The two were slated to race at Winter Springs, but Bryce and most of her Hagerty teammates sat that one out. They finally saw each other at the flrunners.com Invitational with Seymour in the top five and Blake in tenth. This time Seymour had home field advantage and showed why she should be mentioned as the best in 4A this year. Both battled it out for the first mile, but after that Seymour took over. She said after the race she thought it would be a back and forth battle with Blake for the majority of the race. Seymour crossed the line in 18:04.50 to get the win with Blake thirty-six second behind her in 18:41.50. Blake's Dr. Phillips' teammate Amber Johnson rounded out the top three in 18:58.80. The hometown Huskies edged out Lake Mary 104-116 for the team title. Blake and Johnson lead the Panthers to a third place showing.

On the boys side, it appeared a trio all familiar with one another would be in contention for the individual championship. Deland's Keneth Pineiro has been dominant in 2012, winning most of the meets he has entered, and finishing well at the flrunners.com Invitational. Saturday morning proved no different for the youngster. He came through the mile mark in a fast 4:50 about ten seconds faster than everyone else. He demolished the field, running all alone, to a time of 15:56.40. His neighbor to the south CJ Westfall of Orange City University High School finished second in a new personal best time of 16:32.90. Justin Schanze of Oviedo who is used to running up front with this group, had an unfortunate day as he fell with around 150 meters to go, and slipped back to 47th. Payton Bailey of Lake Highland was third in 16:34.30. Boone placed their top five in the top nineteen lead by Burkhardt Helfirch's sixth place finish to pace the Braves to the team championship with 73 points. Lake Mary was second with 93 points while Lake Highland was third with 120.

Spruce Creek posted a perfect score of fifteen points in the girls junior varsity race. Anna Kelly took individual honors in 22:53.00. The Hawks had a 1-5 spread of 1:10. Deland was second and Boone was third. In the boys race, Ivan Montero got going and never stopped. The Lake Howell runner got moved down to junior varsity this week and proved that he should be running with the top seven after nobody was even close. He crossed the line in 17:58.80, almost a minute better than runner-up Kollin Boswell of Melbourne. Following in the girls footsteps, the Spruce Creek boys junior varsity had a good showing as well although the overall title didn't come as easily. The Hawks with fourth place finisher Austin Hodgkins barely beat Boone who had the third best runner Anthony Turner. It came down to one point 61-62. Lake Mary was third with 74 points.
