Where Are They Now? Daniel Moore

Daniel Moore was a part of the success at Holy Trinity in both track and field as well as cross country. Over his four years he won four state titles, one as an indidivual in the 3200 meters , and three team titles, two in cross country, and one in track and field. Moore is now a freshman at Duke University and just completed his first cross country season as a Blue Devil.

How has your first year at Duke been?

It's been good. Cross Country didn't go as well as I had hoped, but I'm thinking long term and it's looking good. It was just a big transition I wasn't ready for. Everything was more volume and more difficult than I was used to, but I'm getting the hang of it.

What was the biggest adjustment you had to make to compete at the college level?

The biggest adjustment I had to make was the training, hands down. My mileage was similar and even a little less than high school, but intensity and expectations are way up. In high school I got very comfortable with the workouts because we pretty much did the same thing every year, which I think helped a lot in high school, but nothing can really prepare you to go from 5 x 1k on the track to 10 x 1k on a hilly cross country loop at the same pace. That’s an adjustment that has taken and will take time.

Is there anything you can tell high school athletes to better prepare them for the college experience?

As far as training goes, don’t shy away from miles. Of all the freshmen on the team, I did the highest mileage in high school and because of this, I had a much easier time staying healthy and transitioning to 8k.

What memories from competing in high school stand out the most?

The memories that stand out are from my senior year of track when Joey Castagnaro and I went 1-2 in the 3200 and gave our team the points we need to win the meet as a team.

What do you miss most about running in high school?

Winning. It’s much easier to do in high school guys. Enjoy it.

What piece of coaching or advice that someone gave you has been the biggest help?

In 6th grade my friend Peter Karas and I finished the mile run, both finishing in 6:27 and he said, “Daniel, you have potential to be good at this.” This gave me the little bit of push I needed to start running competitively. Then in 8th grade I started training under Coach Butler. Peter’s at Harvard now, so he’s a pretty smart guy.
