Mandarin Boys Beat Buchholz In Tie Breaker, Delay, Pigg Propel Fletcher Girls Ricky Quintana Oct 22, 2016

Buchholz senior Calum McFetridge clocked his second sub 16 minute time of the season to win the 4A District 1 Championship, but it was Mandarin who put them in a race that saw each team score an identical 54 points. On the girl's side Fletcher senior Kayley Delay and freshman Liberty Pigg went 1-2 to give their squad the team title over Mandarin with 33 points. Chiles junior Michael Phillips and Belen Jesuit junior Joshua Collins showed why they are two of the top boys in the class of 2018 duking it out in the elite race at Pre-State, with the hometown Timberwolve coming out on top in a FL#2 time of 15:27.80. On the girls side, Lincoln freshman Alyson Churchill continued her spectacular 2016 with the biggest win of her high school career. Team wise the Marist boys made the trip down from Georgia to defeat Chiles, while the Niceville girls proved why they are ranked number one in our Saucony Flo 50 team rankings.

In his last year of 42 years of coaching, Buchholz Head Coach Ron Norris is putting together quite a string of memories. At last week's Mtn Dew Classic, he saw his top runner, Calum McFetridge fall and then crawl to the line to finish 27th. And this week, at his own Buchholz Bobcat Classic-his 16th at Buchholz to go along with 20 at his former school, Newberry- he had to disqualify a runner for interference during Saturday's race.

And so it begins-a week of anticipation that will culminate in 10 athletes from four different regions being sent to the sunny San Diego, CA for the granddaddy of them all, the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships. And who wouldn’t want to go? The weekend is set to backdrop of the storied Hotel Del Coronado( Marilyn Monroe’s “Some Like it Hot”) and Balboa Park which has seen so many great high schoolers clash to earn bragging rights as the nation’s top high school athlete.
