Scouting Report: Niceville Girls Todd Grasley Aug 10, 2016

The Niceville girls placed second at the 3A Cross Country Finals in 2015 and return six of their top seven from that team as well as a number of other runners that are waiting in the wings to make that varsity roster. The Eagles are first in our team rankings entering the season, but will face a tough test from defending champion Chiles and a very talented Fort Myers' squad. We caught up with Coach James LaFollette about his team, their training, and the upcoming season.

Scouting Report: Wharton Girls Todd Grasley Aug 09, 2016

The Wharton girls placed 13th in 2014, 3rd in 2015, and are looking to make the podium this fall. The Wildcats have an experienced line up coming coming back that includes their top whole seven with several seniors. The Wildcats will go head to head with the Wildcats of Winter Park who are looking to win their third straight 4A championship. We caught up with Coach Anthony Triana to talk about his team and what it would take to knock the defending champs.

Scouting Report: North Port Boys Todd Grasley Aug 08, 2016

The North Port boys finished 18th at last year's state meet and return six of their top seven from 2015 and will rely on their pack running and 1-5 split of 32 seconds to make the podium. Our current 4A rankings have them ranked second behind clear favorite and defending state champions St. Thomas Aquinas. The Bobcats won't have it easy as nearby teams Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, and Newsome will all be in the hunt. We talked with coach Phu Nguyen about this year's team.

Dora Bible comes with a new classification as she will face off against the best of the best in a loaded 2A. 4A Girls Team Rankings: Winter Park Locked & Loaded For Third Straight Todd Grasley Aug 05, 2016

Winter Park claimed the last two 4A crowns and lose only two of their seven athletes from that championship squad. Rafaella Gibbons, an NXN qualifier, and 2014 individual state champion, will lead the Wildcats that have a team average under 19 minutes and will benefit from Dr. Phillips' transfer Charis Ivey. Sarasota and Wharton who finished second and third last year will battle for that second podium spot. We look at the top ten teams in the state's largest classification. 


4A Boys Team Rankings: St. Thomas Aquinas Sizzling 21s 1-5 Split Squanders Competition Todd Grasley Aug 05, 2016

Of all the classifications nobody is favored to win more than the boys of St. Thomas Aquinas. The 2015 4A state champions return five of their top seven and have an incredible 1-5 split of 21.89s! The real battle will be for second place where Lakewood Ranch, North Port, Sarasota, and Newsome all have a shot to make the podium and will rely on the back end of their line up to get there. We take a look at the top ten boys teams in 4A.


Spotlight Q&A: Lake Wales Sophomore Paul Stafford Plans On Shaking Up 2A Rankings Todd Grasley Aug 05, 2016

Lake Wales sophomore Paul Stafford didn't have a freshman season he'd like to remember. After running 4:18 for 1,500m as an 8th grader and member of the Central Florida Gliders club team, he was hoping to be one of the top youngsters in the state. However, a torn hamstring derailed those plans and had Stafford staying home during the state meet. He's proven he's back after running 16:25 in a recent workout and hopes to shake up the 2A rankings. We caught up with Stafford to talk about his training, the upcoming season, and more.

The Niceville girls finished as the 3A runner-up in 2015, but return six of their top seven from that team with Hannah Schneidewind, Claire Crist, and Erin Eubanks a solid 1-3. Fort Myers has top ranked Krissy Gear, the 3A individual runner-up at the helm for the Green Wave, while mainstay Chiles, the defending champions are ranked third. Creekside and Chiles finished 1-2 at the 3A state meet last year and look to be positioned for the same showing this fall. 2A Girls Team Rankings: Bolles One State Title Away From 11, Most In Florida History Todd Grasley Aug 03, 2016

The Bolles girls (seen here after their district championship win) have 2A's top distance runner in Caitlin Collier and a team average time of 18:53.86. The Bulldogs are the favorite to win their fifth straight title and 11th in program history, which would surpass Plant as the most in state history. Pine Crest, who has been by Bolles side on the podium as the runner-up over the past few season look to be headed for that same feat in 2016. We take a look at the top 2A girls teams this fall.

The Trinity Prep Saints have won the last three 2A cross country state championships and are the favorites for number four in 2016. Coach Vinal's teams have always been known for their tight pack running and that will be a key as well this fall with the 1-5 split at 1:04.60 and likely to drop significantly by November.  Coach Butler's Satellite squad is strong as well as the Bolles boys and shouldn't be left out of the title talk. Summer Training Blog: Key West's Nicole Matysik: Getting Faster In Nation's Southern Most Point Todd Grasley Aug 03, 2016

There aren't a ton of hills or trails in the nation's southern most point of Key West, Florida, the home of Nicole Matysik. That's not stopping the Conchs' sophomore, who has a personal best of 18:27.06 and was 35th at the Cross Country Finals, from putting in quality miles and preparing for the upcoming cross country season. Over the course of the year, Matysik will be sharing her training log as well as her journey to the state meet in November.

The Oak Hall girls have been a podium mainstay of the 1A Cross Country Finals the past few years, but finished fourth in 2015 after winning the 1A Region 2 Championship. The Eagles are coming off a state title in track and have one of the most experienced squads in 1A. However, this year might be one of the closest team battles with Westminster Christian, Oak Hall, and Maclay separated by 5 points, and defending state champion Circle Christian returning five of their top seven.

The Maclay boys finished second in 2015 by fourteen points to Father Lopez. The Marauders return four of their top seven including a trio of James McClure, Jake Mazziotta, and Clay Milford who have the potential to finish in the top ten overall.  Coach Droze knows all about winning and tradition and will face a stiff test from Bishop Snyder. 4A Top 100 Fastest Returning XC Girls: Can Hurricane Hertenstein Strike Twice? Todd Grasley Aug 01, 2016

Bailey "Hurricane" Hertenstein struck Tallahassee last year winning her first cross country state championship by defeating 2015 state champ Rafaella Gibbons of Winter Park. Gibbons went on to qualify for Nike Nationals in Oregon and ran a PR of 17:30.80 at NXNSE, nearly two seconds faster than Hertenstein's 17:32.55. Fletcher senior Kayley Delay is the third athlete in 4A to run under 18 minutes with her PR of 17:56.70. Check out the top 100 girls returners in a loaded 4A! (

Buchholz senior Calum McFetridge and Durant senior Haftom Fliegelman finished third and fourth at the 4A Cross Country State Finals in 2015 and are the top two returners in the state's largest classification with times of 15:53.75 and 15:54.17. Seven of the top ten times are from members of the class of 2018 while four of the top ten are from St. Thomas Aquinas runners. We take a look at the top 100 boys returners in 4A.

Bolles sophomore Caitlin Collier was INCHES away from claiming her first cross country state championship. Collier collapsed right before the line and saw her closest competitor Alyssa Pujals of Pine Crest cruise in for the victory. The Bulldog sophomore is coming off a stellar track season where she won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200m titles. Her PR of 17:41.80 from NXNSE Region is the only time in 2A under 18 minutes. Hernando junior Trevor Foley started out his sophomore season with an early season of PR of 15:34.53 to finish second at the UF Mt. Dew Invitational, was sixth at the flrunners.com Invitational, and won every race up until regionals. Injury struck and Foley ended up placing 75h at the Cross Country Finals. Sophomore Rebecca Clark was just shy of a state title as an 8th grader and 9th grader finishing as the 1A runner-up in both races. In 2016, she will be running for The Villages High School, and move up from 1A into a different classification, opening the door for Oak Hall junior Grace Blair.. Blair comes in with a PR nearly 20 seconds faster than her nearest competitor with a time of 18:34.10! Check out the top 100 girls returners in 1A.



Top 50 Girls Returning XC Teams - Based On 3200m Track Times: Chiles Front Three Under 11:25 Todd Grasley Jul 26, 2016

With track season ending we bridge the gap to the start of cross country by using our extensive stats database. to take a look at the top 50 girls cross country teams based on 3,200m track times. The Chiles girls hope their success on the track parlays into more state titles for the Timberwolves cross country program. Ana Wallace's 11:05.19 is the top returning time in the state for 3,200m and gives the team three girls under 11:25.
