Every track fan loves a good rivalry. Problem is, with just four short years in high school, rivalries rise and fall as quickly as prep athletes graduate and move on. In Tampa, there's a rivalry brewing that could stick this year and the next three years beyond. Enter Gaither freshman LaSarah Hargrove and Armwood freshman Ani Wells.
Inclement weather nearly torpedoed the Vernon Korhn Hillsborough County Track and Field Championships Tuesday. The 4x800m got off and a few field events got scored before a deluge and lightning forced everyone indoors. Meet officials elected to postpone the meet until later in the evening and run timed finals. It proved to be the right call as the weather relented and the rest of the meet ran smoothly.
Four Hillsborough Country programs kicked off their cross country seasons at the inaugural New Tampa Preseason meet at Pebble Creek Golf Course on Aug. 28. King won the girls team title with 35 points, slipping past Wharton by seven and Freedom by 12. Freedom took first for the boys with 23, besting Wharton by nine.
It was a great 2011-2012 in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. Many of our seniors will soon be on their way to start their college careers both athletically and academically so we wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature.
