Johnson Places Fifth in 200m at World University Games

KAZAN, Russia - Topping her outstanding preliminary performance, Bethune-Cookman sprinter Tristie Johnson again moved up the rankings, Wednesday (July 10) at the World University Games, culminating in a fifth place finish in the 200m at Kazan's Central Stadium.

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure,” Johnson commented following the race.

After moving into the top 10 with her preliminary performance on Tuesday (July 9), Johnson turned in solid back-to-back races, first in the semifinals and then again in the finals, running a time of 23.32 to finish in fifth place for USA Track & Field against some of the world's top collegiate sprint competition.

“It is an exciting time for the program,” Bethune-Cookman Head Coach Donald Cooper noted. “She is definitely representing the university well as its first participant, and now finalist, at the World University Games.”

“She is a tremendous competitor and I am pleased with how her freshman campaign has gone,” Cooper added. “We are anxiously awaiting her performance with the relay team and looking forward to her chance of getting on the medal stand.”

In the semifinal, Johnson ran a time of 23.47 to finish third in her heat, snagging one of the two remaining non-automatic qualification spots. Her .162 second reaction time was by far the best in the heat.

Although her 200m competitions are complete, the meet is far from over for the Wildcats' sophomore-to-be from Jacksonville, Fla. She is slated to return to action as part of USATF's 4 x 100m relay squad on Thursday (July 11) at 6:45 p.m. local time (Moscow Standard Time - MSK), 10:45 a.m. EDT.

It is unclear at this time which leg she will run for the USATF relay team.
