RIO DE JANEIRO – Gator Greats
Christian Taylor (United States) and
Will Claye (United States) repeated as gold and silver medalists, becoming the first triple jumpers in history to post 1-2 finishes in consecutive Olympiads.
Taylor is just the fifth man in history to successfully defend his Olympic title, joining America's Myer Prinstein (1900 & 1904), Brazil's Adhemar da Silva (1952 & 1956), Poland's Jozef Szmidt (1960 & 1964), and USSR's Viktor Saneyev (1968, 1972, 1976) as the only others to accomplish the feat.
The American record holder's gold medal is the fifth in Florida track and field history.
With his second straight silver medal, Claye became just the fifth American triple jumper in history to win multiple Olympic medals.
UF track and field now boasts 19 Olympic medals in its history.
Kerron Clement (United States), this year's Olympic Trials champion and 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the 400 hurdles, qualified for Thursday (Aug. 18) morning's final with the top overall time (48.26) in the semifinals.
Genevieve LaCaze (Australia), UF's school record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, ran a personal record in the 5,000 meters preliminary to qualify for Friday (Aug. 19) night's final. It's her second event final of these Olympics.
Fellow Gator Great
Shara Proctor (Great Britain), making her second Olympics appearance, did not advance through the long jump qualifying.
