GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of South Florida cross country teams ran strong in the second meet of the season, as the women's squad took third while the men finished eighth at the Mountain Dew Invitational held at the University of Florida Golf Course Friday evening.
Sophomore Nicole Rozario was the top finisher for the Bulls, taking 10th overall in the 5k, and eighth among attached runners, in 18:21.95 to lead the women's team to a point total of 121, finishing behind the University of Tampa (87 points) and the host No. 14 Gators, who came in first with 18 points. A total of 23 teams competed on the women's side.
Sophomore Allie Prendergast finished just behind Rozario, taking 12th out of a total of 228 athletes with a time of 18:25.88. Fellow classmates Yasmin Smith (19:03.00) and Jen Wynands (19:14.17) came in 28th and 31st, respectively, while sophomore Devin Spoerle rounded out the top 5 for the Bulls, coming in 52nd place in 19:55.84.
The men placed eighth out of 18 teams with a point total of 194, led by sophomore Phillip Wise, who captured the top spot for the Bulls with a time of 26:17.30, good for 25th. Junior Pedro Carela grabbed 43rd out of a total of 198 competitors, finishing in 27:07.90.
Sophomore Lucas Simari, senior Robert Sudduth and sophomore Sean Foster took the next three spots for the Bulls, finishing within a 15-second span.
Simari came in 56th in a time of 27:23.00, while Sudduth followed behind in 27:32.30 good for a 64th-place finish. Foster was the fifth Bull to cross the finish line, using a time of 27:38.00 to come in 66th.
The Bulls will take another two-week break before returning to competition Oct. 2 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh.
