DELAND, Fla. - The University of South Florida cross country teams had strong days at the Sodexho Stetson Hatter Invitational, earning top 4 finishes to build momentum heading into the conference championships. The men finished fourth overall and the women took second Friday afternoon at the Sperling Sports Complex.
The women's team posted a total of 67 points, as North Florida captured the title with a point total of 57. A total of 20 teams ran the women's 5k race.
The men's squad had a solid finish as well, taking fourth out of a total of 18 teams with 93 points. East Tennessee State had the top score with 65 points, while Embry Riddle and North Florida finished second and third, respectively.
Out of a total of 175 runners in the women's race, sophomore Nicole Rozario had the third-best time among attached individuals with a time of 18:06. Classmate Allie Prendergast also earned a top-10 finish, taking sixth in 18:27.
Sophomore Jen Wynands used a time of 19:00 to come in 13th, while sophomore Devin Spoerle (19:45) and senior Kelly Savery (19:50) came in 26th and 28th, respectively, to round out the top 5 for USF.
The Bulls grabbed second as a team despite not having the services of one of their top-3 runners, as sophomore Yasmin Smith was unable to compete while battling illness.
Junior Pedro Carela had the top time for the Bulls for the first time this season, finishing 11th in 26:52 in the men's 8k. Sophomore Phillip Wise followed right behind Carela in 26:58 for 13th.
Senior Ryan Courtoy crossed the line in 20th out of 142 competitors in 27:26, while freshman Felix Soto followed suit one place behind Courtoy in 27:27. Senior Robert Sudduth finished fifth for the Bulls and 29th overall in 27:50.
The Bulls also ran two other teams in the women's race, as the USF 'B' team finished 12th, and the 'C' team came in 19th.
USF will rest with a two-week break from competition before heading up to Kenosha, Wis., for the BIG EAST Championships Oct. 31 beginning at noon.
