STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore David Aristil outran the competition to take first place in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles for the University of South Florida track and field team on the first day of the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup Friday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on the campus of Penn State.

The women finished the day in first place with 44 points, ahead of Cornell with 41 and Auburn with 37 points. The men completed action in a three-way tie with Auburn and Buffalo for second with 28 points, just behind the day's leader, Princeton, which had 29.

Aristil continued to stay hot, as he won hurdles title with a time of 8.04, up from his time of 8.20 in the preliminaries. Aristil won by .11 seconds as he tied the best indoor mark of his career set earlier this season.

Hopkins, in his first collegiate meet, went 6.89, putting him into a tie for the fourth-best time in the BIG EAST behind teammates Lamar and freshman Neamen Wise. Hopkins posted the fifth BIG EAST qualifying mark for the Bulls in the 60 meters on the season.

Second place belong to junior Stephanie Duffy in the pole vault, as last week's NCAA provisional qualifier cleared 12-8.25. Junior Dana Webb finished fifth after leaping 11-9.75.

Sophomore Lauren Noe also took second in the weight throw, launching the ball 58-9.5, just .75 inches from first place. Classmate Atasha Warren took fourth by throwing a PR of 55-11.25.

Senior Yvana Hepburn took fourth in the finals of the 60 hurdles for the women, posting a time of 8.51 as she finished behind three NCAA provisional qualifiers from Auburn. Freshman Ena Johnson did not complete the preliminaries after getting knocked down by the competitor to her right.

Sophomore Jared Thomas took seventh in the weight throw after heaving the ball 56-5.25, going nearly four feet past his previous career best.

Junior Rachel Etienne competed in the pentathlon Friday, placing fourth overall among a field of 11 with 3,155 points. Etienne had two of her best events in the 800 meters and the long jump, where she took second both times. Etienne leapt 17-2.75 in the long jump to place second, while also taking second in the 800 meters in 2:29.11.
